Het herboren merk Freelander, dat gezamenlijk is ontwikkeld door Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) en het Chinese Chery, heeft officieel bevestigd dat Duitsland, Belgi\u00eb en Nederland tot zijn Europese doelmarkten behoren.<\/p>\n

De internationale Freelander 8 zal echter aanzienlijk verschillen van de krachtige Chinese versie: de accucapaciteit is bijna gehalveerd, terwijl het vermogen daalt van 818 naar 617 hp.<\/p>\n

Als we zoals in april gemeld<\/a>, keert de originele Land Rover Freelander terug als een op zichzelf staand, in China geproduceerd premium SUV-merk. Sindsdien is het eerste model, de imposante Freelander 8 van 5,12 meter, in China op de markt gekomen, terwijl Chery en JLR hun plannen voor internationale uitbreiding hebben gepresenteerd.<\/p>\n

Europa is inbegrepen, waarbij Duitsland, Itali\u00eb, Belgi\u00eb, Nederland, Zwitserland en Spanje expliciet worden genoemd. In Duitsland zou de nieuwkomer in 2027 op de markt kunnen komen, terwijl Nederlandse automedia eerder eind 2027 als datum voor Nederland noemden. De offici\u00eble lanceringsdata voor de Benelux zijn nog niet bevestigd.<\/p>\n

Kleinere accu, andere motor<\/h4>\n

Het meest opvallende verschil betreft de aandrijflijn. In China maakt de Freelander 8 gebruik van een 1,5-liter benzinemotor als range extender en twee elektromotoren die samen 610 kW (818 pk) produceren. De ruime CATL-accu van 60,3 kWh biedt een elektrisch rijbereik tot 310 km volgens de optimistische CLTC-cyclus van China.<\/p>\n

Voor de internationale versie met het stuur aan de linkerkant, die in Abu Dhabi werd onthuld, heeft Chery gekozen voor een 2,0-liter turbohybridemotor en een aanzienlijk kleinere lithium-ijzerfosfaat (LFP)-accu van 34,12 kWh.<\/p>\n

Het gecombineerde vermogen daalt tot 460 kW (617 pk), met een koppel van 662 Nm. De acceleratie van 0 naar 100 km\/uur duurt 5,8 seconden in plaats van 4,6 seconden. Chery claimt een elektrisch bereik van 110 km en een gecombineerd bereik van 886 km, hoewel de Europese WLTP-cijfers nog niet beschikbaar zijn.<\/p>\n

Het internationale model ondersteunt 11 kW wisselstroomopladen en gelijkstroom-snelladen van 20 tot 80% in maximaal 20 minuten. Deze specificaties gelden momenteel voor de versie voor het Midden-Oosten. Chery heeft nog niet bevestigd of het Europese model dezelfde configuratie zal hebben.<\/p>\n

Een serieuze terreinwagen<\/h4>\n

Ondanks zijn elektrische aandrijving is de Freelander 8 ontworpen om meer te bieden dan alleen een trendy SUV-design. Het intelligente vierwielaandrijvingssysteem beschikt over negen rijmodi, terwijl de luchtvering met twee kamers en de adaptieve demping zorgen voor een bodemvrijheid van maximaal 266 mm.<\/p>\n

Chery geeft bovendien een doorwaaddiepte van 900 mm op en vermeldt dat het voertuig hellingen van 70% kan beklimmen. Het Europese model zal naar verwachting vijf zitplaatsen bieden, in plaats van de optionele configuratie met zes zitplaatsen van de Chinese versie. Later zou er een volledig elektrische versie kunnen volgen, maar de introductie daarvan in Europa is nog niet bevestigd.<\/p>\n

Veelbelovende start in China<\/h4>\n

De Freelander 8 werd op 3 september officieel in China gelanceerd. De eerste reacties waren bemoedigend: Chery meldde meer dan 5.000 definitieve bestellingen binnen twaalf uur, na meer dan 10.000 reserveringen tijdens de eerste 48 uur van de voorverkoop.<\/p>\n

De leveringen aan klanten zouden op 19 september van start gaan, hoewel er nog geen betrouwbare registratiecijfers uit de detailhandel beschikbaar zijn om het succes op langere termijn te beoordelen.<\/p>\n

De Chinese actieprijzen beginnen bij 289.900 yuan (\u20ac 35.000) en lopen op tot 379.900 yuan (\u20ac 46.000). Het Europese model zal onvermijdelijk aanzienlijk duurder zijn.<\/p>\n

Een indicatieve instapprijs van \u20ac 55.000\u2013\u20ac 65.000 in Belgi\u00eb, mogelijk iets hoger in Nederland, lijkt aannemelijk, maar blijft een schatting van de redactie en is geen officieel aangekondigde prijs.<\/p>\n

Brits erfgoed, Chinese technologie<\/h4>\n

De Freelander laat zien hoe ingrijpend de auto-industrie is veranderd. JLR draagt de historische Britse naam en ontwerpexpertise bij, terwijl Chery een groot deel van de engineering, de elektrische technologie, de productie en de toeleveringsketen voor zijn rekening neemt.<\/p>\n

Cruciaal is dat de nieuwe Freelander onafhankelijk van het bestaande dealernetwerk van Land Rover zal opereren. In Nederland zal naar verwachting het distributienetwerk van Chery een rol spelen.<\/p>\n

Chery beschikt al over een gevestigd Belgisch verkoop- en servicenetwerk via zijn merken Omoda en Jaecoo, wat een kant-en-klare infrastructuur zou kunnen bieden voor de introductie van de Freelander.<\/p>\n

Het blijft echter onduidelijk of het nieuwe premiummerk gebruik zal maken van deze dealers of een apart distributienetwerk zal opzetten, los van zowel de bestaande merken van Chery als Land Rover.<\/p>\n

Politiek gevoelig moment<\/h4>\n

De Europese ambities van de Freelander komen ook op een politiek gevoelig moment. Hoewel in China gebouwde plug-in-hybriden momenteel nog niet onder de extra EU-tarieven voor volledig elektrische auto\u2019s vallen, bereidt Brussel zich voor op eventuele beperkingen op de invoer van Chinese hybride voertuigen<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Nu China heeft geweigerd de export vrijwillig te beperken, overweegt de Europese Commissie naar verluidt vrijwaringsmaatregelen waarbij invoerquota worden gecombineerd met aanvullende invoerheffingen.<\/p>\n

Aangezien de Freelander 8 naar verwachting in 2027 in Europa op de markt komt, zou de concurrerende prijsstelling ervan deels kunnen afhangen van de uitkomst van deze onderhandelingen.
