Elektrische auto\u2019s blijken een onverwachte buffer te vormen tegen de wereldwijde oliecrisis. Alleen al in de Benelux vervangen elektrische auto\u2019s volgens de energiethinktank Ember jaarlijks naar schatting $1 miljard aan olie.<\/p>\n

In de hele EU heeft elektrische mobiliteit in slechts zes maanden tijd $3,1 miljard aan olieverbruik voorkomen. En nu batterij-elektrische auto\u2019s in september goed waren voor meer dan de helft van de nieuwe registraties in Belux, neemt dat voordeel op het gebied van energiezekerheid steeds verder toe.<\/p>\n

Elektrische mobiliteit gaat steeds vaker om meer dan alleen het terugdringen van de uitstoot. Nu geopolitieke spanningen de olievoorziening verstoren en de prijzen opdrijven, draagt elke benzine- of dieselauto die wordt vervangen door een elektrische auto bij aan het verminderen van de Europese afhankelijkheid van ge\u00efmporteerde fossiele brandstoffen.<\/p>\n

Volgens Ember, een in Londen gevestigde onafhankelijke denktank op het gebied van energie die pleit voor een snellere overgang naar schone energie, hebben elektrische auto\u2019s tussen maart en augustus 2026 in olie-importerende landen naar schatting 200 miljoen vaten ruwe olie, ter waarde van $20 miljard, vervangen.<\/p>\n

De cijfers zijn afkomstig uit de onlangs gelanceerde wereldwijde EV-tracker, die 56 landen bestrijkt. China was goed voor $14 miljard, gevolgd door de Europese Unie met $3,1 miljard.<\/p>\n

Hoewel Ember zich grotendeels baseert op offici\u00eble registratiegegevens, zijn de geschatte oliebesparingen gebaseerd op veronderstelde rijpatronen en brandstofverbruik, en niet op onafhankelijk gemeten dalingen in de olie-import.<\/p>\n

Benelux: 2,3 miljoen elektrische voertuigen, $1 miljard aan bespaarde olie<\/h4>\n

Uit een analyse door Newmobility.news van de onderliggende datasets van Ember blijkt dat er in Belgi\u00eb, Nederland en Luxemburg samen bijna 2,3 miljoen volledig elektrische en plug-in hybride auto\u2019s op de weg rijden.<\/p>\n

Hun gezamenlijke vloot vervangt jaarlijks naar schatting 10,24 miljoen vaten olie-equivalent, ofwel ongeveer 28.000 vaten per dag.<\/p>\n

Nederland staat aan kop met 1,39 miljoen elektrische voertuigen, waarmee jaarlijks $540 miljoen aan olie wordt bespaard. Belgi\u00eb volgt met bijna 842.000 voertuigen en $438,5 miljoen, terwijl de 65.200 elektrische voertuigen in Luxemburg goed zijn voor nog eens $43,3 miljoen.<\/p>\n

Samen komt dat neer op $1,02 miljard, uitgaande van de door Ember gehanteerde Brent-olieprijs van $99,80 per vat.<\/p>\n

Dit zijn op modellen gebaseerde, op jaarbasis berekende schattingen, geen daadwerkelijk gemeten besparingen. Ze zijn gebaseerd op aannames over het aantal gereden kilometers, de brandstofeffici\u00ebntie van voertuigen en de vervanging van auto\u2019s met verbrandingsmotoren. Niettemin illustreren ze het toenemende economische belang van elektrificatie.<\/p>\n

Belgi\u00eb overschrijdt de drempel van 50%<\/h4>\n

Uit de meest recente registratiecijfers blijkt dat het potentieel voor het vervangen van benzine en diesel in de Benelux nog steeds snel toeneemt. Volgens Febiac en de federale mobiliteitsdienst van Belgi\u00eb waren volledig elektrische voertuigen goed voor een een recordaantal van 50,91 TP3T aan nieuwe registraties<\/a> in Belgi\u00eb en Luxemburg samen in september, tegenover 46,2% in augustus.<\/p>\n

Het cumulatieve marktaandeel van BEV\u2019s in Belgi\u00eb bedroeg 39,1% in de eerste negen maanden van 2026, een stijging ten opzichte van 34,7% in 2025. Particuliere kopers waren goed voor 20,2% van de BEV-registraties, hoewel bedrijfswagens de overgang blijven domineren.<\/p>\n

Nederland loopt volgens de cijfers van Ember nog verder voorop: tot en met september waren BEV\u2019s goed voor 41,3% van de nieuwe registraties. Inclusief plug-in-hybriden bedroeg het aandeel van elektrische voertuigen bijna 63%.<\/p>\n

Interessant is dat het Belgische elektrische wagenpark slechts 61% zo groot is als het Nederlandse wagenpark, maar naar schatting 81% van de brandstofbesparing van het Nederlandse wagenpark oplevert.<\/p>\n

Verschillen in rijgedrag en voertuigsamenstelling kunnen een deel van die kloof verklaren, hoewel de methodologie van Ember geen definitieve oorzaak aantoont.<\/p>\n

Van klimaatbeleid tot energiezekerheid<\/h4>\n

In de rest van Europa zijn de economische gevolgen nu al aanzienlijk. Het Duitse wagenpark van elektrische voertuigen heeft tussen maart en augustus ongeveer $760 miljoen aan olie vervangen, terwijl Frankrijk goed was voor $560 miljoen.<\/p>\n

Denemarken biedt een nog opvallender voorbeeld: het elektrisch wagenpark vervangt daar naar schatting 6,4 miljoen vaten per jaar, wat overeenkomt met 13% van het totale olieverbruik van het land in 2025.<\/p>\n

Ondertussen breidt de wereldwijde overstap naar elektrische voertuigen zich uit tot buiten de traditionele bolwerken. De marktaandeel van volledig elektrische auto\u2019s bedroeg in de eerste acht maanden van 2026 wereldwijd 18%, een stijging ten opzichte van 16% een jaar eerder.<\/p>\n

Buiten China en de Verenigde Staten steeg de verkoop van BEV\u2019s met 45%, waarbij opkomende markten zoals India, Brazili\u00eb en Vietnam aan kracht wonnen.<\/p>\n

De VS steken daar juist met kop en schouders bovenuit. Het marktaandeel van volledig elektrische auto\u2019s (BEV\u2019s) is daar gedaald tot ongeveer 6%, en 49 van de 56 landen die door Ember worden gevolgd, melden nu een hoger aandeel elektrische auto\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Minder olie, maar niet zonder kosten<\/h4>\n

De berekeningen van Ember vormen geen volledige economische balans. Daarin wordt geen rekening gehouden met de kosten van elektriciteitsproductie, laadinfrastructuur of de aanschaf van elektrische auto\u2019s. Plug-in-hybriden zorgen bovendien voor onzekerheid, omdat de daadwerkelijke brandstofbesparing sterk afhangt van hoe vaak bestuurders hun auto opladen.<\/p>\n

Bovendien wordt de verdrongen olie berekend op basis van een hypothetisch wagenpark van voertuigen op verbrandingsmotoren, in plaats van rechtstreeks gemeten bij raffinaderijen of brandstofpompen.<\/p>\n

Toch wordt de onderliggende boodschap steeds relevanter voor Europa. Elk vat dat niet langer nodig is voor het wegvervoer, vermindert de kwetsbaarheid voor internationale verstoringen van de aanvoer en prijsschokken.<\/p>\n
