De Chinese batterijfabrikant Greater Bay Technology (GBT) is in zijn fabriek bij Guangzhou begonnen met de serieproductie van volledig vaste-stofbatterijcellen. Het bedrijf beweert dat dit een wereldprimeur is, aangezien alle toonaangevende spelers zich nog in de proeffase bevinden.<\/p>\n

GBT, een ontwikkelaar van batterijcellen die wordt gesteund door autoconcern GAC, heeft officieel zijn eerste fabriek voor solid-state-cellen geopend. De aanvankelijke capaciteit bedraagt 1 GWh, een bescheiden cijfer, maar de locatie beschikt over nog eens 3 GWh die kan worden ingezet als de vraag toeneemt.<\/p>\n

Moeilijk te voorspellen<\/h4>\n

Het woord \u201combouw\u201d is in dit geval van belang, aangezien GBT zijn fabriek niet helemaal vanaf nul heeft opgebouwd. Interessant genoeg heeft de ontwikkelaar gebruikgemaakt van een bestaande lithium-ion-productielijn. De productiehal kan zelfs nog steeds tussen de twee batterijtypes schakelen, wat de strategie een economisch voordeel oplevert. All-solid-state-technologie is op dit moment nog duur. De omvang van de markt is moeilijk te voorspellen.<\/p>\n

Ook de productie is duur. De meeste serieuze solid-state-projecten, zoals die van Toyota, Samsung SDI of CATL, maken gebruik van sulfide-elektrolyten. Deze vallen bij contact met vocht uiteen, waardoor de productie hoge eisen stelt aan faciliteiten die gedurende het hele proces een zuurstofvrije droogomgeving kunnen handhaven.<\/p>\n

Dat ingewikkelde proces vereist een mate van vakkennis en ervaring die niet bij iedereen aanwezig is. Bovendien zou het niet mogelijk moeten zijn om zomaar van het ene batterijtype naar het andere over te schakelen.<\/p>\n

Uitharding binnenin de cel<\/h4>\n

Maar GBT heeft dit probleem omzeild met een organisch-anorganisch composietelektrolyt. Dit wordt als vloeibare precursor in de cel gebracht en hardt daar vervolgens uit, waardoor een elastisch grensvlak met de elektroden ontstaat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Omdat de elektrolyt zich in de cel vormt, kan gebruik worden gemaakt van gangbare lithium-ionapparatuur. De zuurstofvrije omgeving is slechts gedeeltelijk nodig, namelijk voor het vullen met de elektrolyt.<\/p>\n

Huang Xiangdong, oprichter en CTO van GBT, zei: \u201cDit is geen geheel nieuwe productielijn; het is een bestaande lijn met een nieuwe kern.\u201d De A-monsters rolden in april van de band en inmiddels is de serieproductie al van start gegaan. Een tijdsbestek van slechts een half jaar tussen prototype en productie is behoorlijk snel voor innovatie op het gebied van batterijen.<\/p>\n

Echte solid-state<\/h4>\n

Er is ook geen discussie over de ware aard van de solid-state-cellen van GBT. Vaak worden semi-solid-state-cellen op de markt gebracht als het echte werk, maar het zijn totaal andere soorten, die veel gemakkelijker opgeschaald kunnen worden voor massaproductie.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Het National Power Battery Innovation Center in China heeft echter de door GBT geproduceerde cellen getest. Dit zijn de eerste cellen die zijn gecertificeerd volgens het nieuwe Chinese regelgevingskader: norm GB\/T 48093.1-2026.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Die norm maakt een onderscheid tussen echte volledig halfgeleidercellen en de halfvaste en hybride producten die onder dezelfde benaming op de markt worden gebracht. De norm treedt pas in 2028 in werking, maar GBT voldoet nu al aan de eisen.<\/p>\n

En in Europa?<\/h4>\n

GBT heeft echter nog geen cijfers bekendgemaakt. Maar voor een cel die bestemd is voor voertuigen, zullen de energiedichtheid en de levensduur van cruciaal belang blijken te zijn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Europa\u2019s meest concrete \u2018solid-state\u2019-troef is de gigafabriek van ProLogium in Duinkerken. Dit wordt de eerste grootschalige \u2018solid-state\u2019-productiecapaciteit op Europese bodem, en de fabriek komt in Taiwanese handen. Volkswagen volgt een strategie om de technologie van QuantumScape in licentie te nemen voor zijn eigen PowerCo-fabrieken. Hierdoor zou de productie in Europa plaatsvinden, maar zou het belangrijkste intellectuele eigendom in Amerikaanse handen blijven.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Het is echter mogelijk dat we de voertuigen van GTB in Europa gaan zien.
