BMW is van plan om tegen 2029 in zijn fabriek in Steyr, Oostenrijk, een ultramoderne productielijn voor vermogenselektronica en omvormercomponenten op te zetten. Dit initiatief heeft tot doel de technologische expertise van de fabriek in Steyr te versterken, de waardecreatie binnen het bedrijf te vergroten en de belangrijkste knowhow op het gebied van elektrische mobiliteit verder in Oostenrijk te verankeren.<\/p>\n

Tegen de geplande start van de productie in de zomer van 2029 wil BMW meer dan 100 miljoen euro investeren in een nieuwe productiefaciliteit voor onderdelen van omvormermodules.<\/p>\n

De fabriek zal de benodigde extra productiestappen invoeren voor de Gen6-elektromotoren die in februari 2025 worden ge\u00efntroduceerd voor de elektrische auto\u2019s van de Neue Klasse, die nu al op twee productielijnen in Steyr worden geproduceerd. BMW maakte dinsdag bekend dat hierdoor meer toegevoegde waarde op de locatie zal worden gecre\u00eberd.<\/p>\n

Afhankelijkheden verminderen<\/h4>\n

Centraal hierin staat de vermogensmodule, die door BMW wordt omschreven als het kernonderdeel van de omvormer (ook wel converter genoemd). In de toekomst zal de vestiging zowel de toeleveringsketen als de assemblage van dit onderdeel voor haar rekening nemen. Hierdoor wordt de expertise op het gebied van elektrotechniek binnen de fabriek uitgebreid en wordt de fabriek flexibeler in de inkoop van cruciale onderdelen.<\/p>\n

Harald Gottsche, algemeen directeur van BMW Motoren GmbH, zegt: \u201cMet onze intrede in de productie van elektrische aandrijflijnen hebben we aangetoond dat we in Steyr de transformatie onder de knie hebben.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDoor de vermogensmodule zelf te produceren, verdiepen we ons nu nog meer in de elektrotechniek en kunnen we componenten zoals halfgeleiders flexibel inkopen op de wereldmarkt. Dit versterkt onze concurrentiepositie en vermindert onze afhankelijkheid op een geopolitiek gevoelig technologiegebied.\u201d<\/p>\n

Centraal onderdeel<\/h4>\n

De omvormer vormt het hart van de elektrische aandrijflijn. Deze zet gelijkstroom uit de hoogspanningsaccu om in wisselstroom, die de elektromotor nodig heeft. Daarnaast regelt de omvormer de energieoverdracht tussen de accu en de motor. De prestaties en effici\u00ebntie van de omvormer bepalen hoe effectief het voertuig elektrische energie benut.<\/p>\n

De vermogensmodule vormt een essentieel onderdeel van dit vermogenselektronicasysteem. Deze bevat vermogenshalfgeleiders die snel hoge elektrische stromen en spanningen schakelen.<\/div>\n

Simpel gezegd regelen deze onderdelen hoeveel elektrische energie de motor ontvangt. Een effici\u00ebnt ontwerp kan omzettingsverliezen verminderen en de prestaties van de aandrijflijn waarborgen.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

BMW richt een cleanroom-assemblagelijn in voor de nieuwe productie, samen met de bijbehorende infrastructuur. Het bedrijf geeft aan dat het voor het eerst binnen de BMW Group gebruik zal maken van grootvlak-solderen en ultrasoon lassen om de tien afzonderlijke onderdelen van de vermogensmodule te assembleren. Het bedrijf streeft ernaar nieuwe productiecompetenties op te bouwen en de complexe assemblage dieper in de eigen productie te integreren.<\/p>\n

Steyr gaat zijn rol uitbreiden<\/h4>\n

Deze investering markeert de voortdurende transformatie van de fabriek door BMW. De Duitse fabrikant van luxeauto\u2019s zegt dat het de locatie sinds 2022 systematisch heeft uitgebouwd tot een centraal productiecentrum voor elektrische mobiliteit binnen zijn wereldwijde productienetwerk.<\/p>\n

Momenteel voert BMW in Steyr de productie van de Gen6-elektromotoren voor de Neue Klasse op. Tegelijkertijd blijft de fabriek een belangrijke locatie voor verbrandingsmotoren, en Steyr levert nog steeds jaarlijks meer dan een miljoen benzine- en dieselmotoren aan de autofabrieken van de BMW Group.<\/p>\n

De eigen productie van de vermogensmodule zal naar verwachting ook de inkoop van onderdelen, zoals halfgeleiders, flexibeler maken. MD Harald Gottsche rechtvaardigt deze stap door te wijzen op een verbeterde concurrentiepositie en minder afhankelijkheid in een geopolitiek gevoelig technologiegebied. Het bedrijf heeft niet bekendgemaakt hoeveel extra banen de investering zal opleveren. Volgens BMW werken er momenteel ongeveer 4.700 mensen op de locatie.<\/p>\n

Het begon allemaal in 1979<\/h4>\n

BMW richtte de fabriek in Steyr in 1979 op als een gezamenlijk project met het Oostenrijkse Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG. In 1982 nam BMW de volledige zeggenschap over de vestiging over.<\/p>\n

De voormalige Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG maakt ook deel uit van de industri\u00eble geschiedenis achter twee andere bedrijven met vergelijkbare namen: Magna Steyr, gevestigd in Graz, produceert complete voertuigen in opdracht van andere fabrikanten zoals Mercedes-Benz, GAC of Xpeng.<\/p>\n

MAN was daarentegen tijdelijk eigenaar van de huidige fabriek van Steyr Automotive en exploiteert deze nu ook als contractfabrikant van bedrijfsvoertuigen voor andere klanten, waaronder een elektrische vrachtwagen voor SuperPanther en diesel- en elektrische vrachtwagens voor Sinotruk.<\/p>\n
