Fran\u00e7ois Provost, CEO van de Renault Group, heeft openlijk kritiek geuit op de Britse plannen om de verkoop van nieuwe benzine- en dieselauto\u2019s tegen 2030 geleidelijk af te bouwen, en noemde het idee om niet-elektrische voertuigen te verbieden 'dom'.<\/p>\n

Zijn opmerkingen zijn opvallend voor iemand die aan het hoofd staat van een fabrikant die miljarden investeert in elektrische mobiliteit, maar ze weerspiegelen de steeds pragmatischer wordende benadering van Renault ten aanzien van elektrificatie.<\/p>\n

In een gesprek met The Sunday Times<\/em>, Provost vroeg zich af of overheden vaste termijnen zouden moeten opleggen voor het verdwijnen van verbrandingsmotoren. \"Er is geen geschikte datum, want het is dom om niet-elektrische auto\u2019s te verbieden. Het is dom,\" zei hij.<\/p>\n

Zijn opmerkingen komen op een moment dat de Britse regering haar regelgeving inzake emissievrije voertuigen (Zero-Emission Vehicle, ZEV) herziet. Deze regelgeving verplicht fabrikanten momenteel om tegen 2030 een aandeel van 80% in de verkoop van emissievrije nieuwe auto\u2019s te behalen, oplopend tot 100% in 2035.<\/p>\n

Het Verenigd Koninkrijk heeft toegezegd de verkoop van nieuwe auto\u2019s die uitsluitend op benzine of diesel rijden in 2030 te be\u00ebindigen, hoewel conventionele hybride auto\u2019s en plug-in-hybriden tot 2035 verkocht mogen blijven worden. De regering overweegt de tussentijdse doelstellingen te versoepelen onder druk van autofabrikanten.<\/p>\n

Provost stelt dat het versnellen van de elektrificatie, sneller dan klanten en de markt aankunnen, het risico met zich meebrengt dat nieuwe auto\u2019s minder betaalbaar worden. Hij wijst ook op de financi\u00eble druk op fabrikanten, vooral omdat de restwaarden van elektrische voertuigen onzeker blijven.<\/p>\n

Elektrische auto\u2019s niet links laten liggen<\/h4>\n

Deze kritiek is opmerkelijk, omdat Renault een van de meest toegewijde fabrikanten van betaalbare elektrische voertuigen in Europa is. De Renault 5, Renault 4 en Twingo vormen de ruggengraat van een strategie om elektrische mobiliteit toegankelijk te maken voor een breder publiek. De groep investeert bovendien fors in de Europese productie van elektrische voertuigen en in batterijtechnologie van de volgende generatie.<\/p>\n

In het kader van zijn strategisch plan \u201efutuREady\u201c, dat in maart werd gepresenteerd, is de Renault-groep van plan om tegen 2030 36 nieuwe modellen op de markt te brengen, waaronder 16 volledig elektrische voertuigen in Europa. De Franse autofabrikant heeft echter afgezien van zijn plan om tegen het einde van dit decennium uitsluitend op batterij-elektrische auto\u2019s in te zetten.<\/p>\n

In plaats daarvan streeft het merk Renault naar een Europese verkoopmix van 50% volledig elektrische en 50% full-hybride voertuigen tegen 2030. De E-Tech-hybride technologie blijft ook na die datum beschikbaar.<\/p>\n

Voor Provost ligt het verschil tussen het versnellen van de elektrificatie en het wettelijk verplichten van klanten om voor \u00e9\u00e9n bepaalde technologie te kiezen voordat de marktomstandigheden daarvoor rijp zijn.<\/p>\n

Groot-Brittanni\u00eb loopt het risico zich van Europa te verwijderen<\/h4>\n

De opmerkingen van Provost hebben ook een bredere politieke dimensie. De topman van Renault wil dat Groot-Brittanni\u00eb zich sterker aansluit bij het automobielbeleid van de Europese Unie, met name wat betreft de invoer uit China, milieueisen en het voorgestelde industri\u00eble kader \u2018Made in Europe\u2019.<\/p>\n

Dat debat kwam afgelopen vrijdag in een stroomversnelling toen Frankrijk en Duitsland een compromis over de Europese automobielwetgeving bekendmaakten.<\/p>\n

De overeenkomst voorziet in meer flexibiliteit bij de emissiedoelstellingen van de EU voor 2035 en biedt tegelijkertijd meer steun voor in Europa geproduceerde voertuigen. Daarnaast maakt de overeenkomst het mogelijk om Groot-Brittanni\u00eb, onder bepaalde voorwaarden, als een betrouwbare industri\u00eble partner te behandelen.<\/p>\n

Voor Britse autofabrikanten zou deze opname van belang kunnen zijn. De Europese Unie blijft een cruciale exportmarkt voor in het Verenigd Koninkrijk geproduceerde auto\u2019s. Het Frans-Duitse compromis is echter nog geen Europese wetgeving en moet nog op EU-niveau worden goedgekeurd.<\/p>\n

Uit het standpunt van de provost blijkt dat Renault de afstemming op de regelgeving en het concurrentievermogen van de industrie steeds meer als onderling verbonden beschouwt, in plaats van elektrificatiedoelstellingen te zien als een op zichzelf staande milieukwestie.<\/p>\n

Een delicate evenwichtsoefening<\/h4>\n

Niet iedereen sluit zich aan bij de oproepen vanuit de sector tot meer flexibiliteit. De milieuorganisatie Transport & Environment (T&E) is het daar absoluut niet mee eens. Zij noemt het Frans-Duitse compromis een 'historische fout'.<\/p>\n

De organisatie waarschuwt dat het afzwakken van de CO\u2082-doelstellingen de Europese sectoren voor elektrische voertuigen en batterijen zou kunnen ondermijnen in plaats van ze te beschermen. Volgens de modellen van T&E zou de overeenkomst het aandeel van elektrische auto\u2019s in de verkoop van nieuwe auto\u2019s in de EU in 2030 kunnen terugbrengen van 57% naar 43%, waardoor investeringen zouden vertragen en Chinese concurrenten mogelijk sterker zouden worden.<\/p>\n

Fabrikanten wijzen ondertussen op de moeilijkheid om elektrische technologie te financieren en tegelijkertijd conventionele voertuigen betaalbaar te houden en te concurreren met snel groeiende Chinese merken.<\/p>\n

Renault probeert met zijn aanpak deze tegenstrijdige eisen met elkaar te verzoenen. Het bedrijf blijft investeren in elektrische voertuigen, maar behoudt hybride modellen als een belangrijk commercieel en technologisch alternatief.<\/p>\n

De ongewoon recht voor zijn raap ingreep van de rector laat zien hoezeer het debat over de automobielsector is verschoven. Zelfs fabrikanten die voorop lopen in de Europese overgang naar elektrisch rijden, vragen zich steeds vaker af of verplichte deadlines alleen voldoende zijn om die overgang te realiseren.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>
