Volgens het meest recente Lancet Countdown-rapport eist hitte wereldwijd nu ongeveer evenveel levens als hiv of malaria; in het rapport wordt het aantal hittegerelateerde sterfgevallen in 2023 geschat op 710.000.<\/p>\n

Nu wetenschappers waarschuwen dat klimaatverandering een wereldwijde gezondheidscrisis aan het worden is, heeft de Europese Commissie een nieuw kader voor klimaatbestendigheid gepresenteerd dat lidstaten verplicht zich voor te bereiden op steeds extremere omstandigheden \u2013 waaronder een scenario waarin de opwarming van de aarde tegen het einde van de eeuw 3 \u00b0C bedraagt. De geschatte kosten voor het aanpassen van de Europese infrastructuur en economie bedragen 70 miljard euro per jaar.<\/p>\n

\u2018Wereldwijd toenemende gevolgen voor de gezondheid en het overleven\u2019<\/span><\/h4>\n

Volgens het rapport in The Lancet<\/a>, is het gemiddelde aantal sterfgevallen als gevolg van hitte in tien jaar tijd met ongeveer 36 procent gestegen, <\/span>en is koorts als doodsoorzaak inmiddels van een vergelijkbare omvang als malaria en hiv.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

De onderzoekers schrijven zeven op de tien van die hittegerelateerde sterfgevallen toe aan door de mens veroorzaakte klimaatverandering. <\/span>Ze waarschuwen voor een \u201cwereldwijd toenemende invloed op de gezondheid en het voortbestaan\u201d.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Opwarming van de aarde<\/h4>\n

De afgelopen elf jaar waren de warmste die ooit zijn gemeten. Aangezien de uitstoot van broeikasgassen blijft stijgen, zal de aarde waarschijnlijk warmer worden dan de grens van 1,5 graad waarbinnen het Akkoord van Parijs wil blijven.<\/span><\/p>\n

Er zullen aanpassingsmaatregelen nodig zijn, aangezien broeikasgassen zich blijven ophopen in onze atmosfeer.\u00a0<\/span>We stevenen momenteel af op een structurele opwarming van 1,5 graad tegen 2030 (in werkelijkheid is dit nu al het geval, maar tegen die tijd zal het echt structureel zijn). <\/span><\/p>\n

Als de huidige trend zich voortzet, zal de temperatuur in 2050 met 2 graden zijn gestegen en in 2100 zelfs met 3 graden. <\/span>De huidige consensus is om de opwarming onder de 2 graden te houden.\u00a0<\/span>Toch zeggen klimaatwetenschappers dat de wereld bij een opwarming van 1,5 graad al op dun ijs staat.<\/span><\/p>\n

Onvoldoende positieve ontwikkelingen<\/h4>\n

Klimaatverandering heeft uiteenlopende gevolgen voor de gezondheid. Hitte en droogte vormen een bedreiging voor de oogsten en leiden tot voedselonzekerheid, terwijl ziekten zich sneller kunnen verspreiden. <\/span><\/p>\n

Hoewel er weliswaar positieve ontwikkelingen zijn, zoals de groei van hernieuwbare energie en de opkomst van elektrische voertuigen, verloopt de verandering te traag, is de schaal te klein en bereikt deze niet de mensen die er het meest behoefte aan hebben.<\/span><\/p>\n

Europese maatregelen<\/h4>\n

Ondertussen wordt de klimaatcrisis steeds nijpender, ook in Europa.\u00a0<\/span>Denk maar aan de steeds drogere zomers, de bosbranden, de extreme regenval en de lage waterstanden in de rivieren\u2026 Naar schatting zijn er deze zomer in Europa, waaronder in Belgi\u00eb, 35.000 sterfgevallen als gevolg van de hitte geweest.<\/span><\/p>\n

De Europese Unie roept daarom op tot actie. <\/span>Volgens de Europese Commissie zou de EU jaarlijks 70 miljard euro moeten investeren om ons beter te beschermen tegen klimaatverstoringen,<\/span>\u00a0en\u00a0<\/span>om onze infrastructuur en economie voldoende te versterken.\u00a0<\/span>Volgens een eerdere schatting van de VUB bedraagt de schade nu al miljarden euro\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n

De Europese Commissie heeft dit gezegd tijdens de presentatie van de <\/span>EU-kader voor klimaatbestendigheid, met inbegrip van een voorstel voor een Europese wet inzake klimaatbestendigheid. Het initiatief gaat verder dan rampenbestrijding en richt zich op risicopreventie, waarbij nationale autoriteiten worden verplicht kwetsbaarheden in kaart te brengen, verantwoordelijkheden toe te wijzen en investeringen te plannen.<\/p>\n

Voor alle duidelijkheid: de EU heeft geen begroting goedgekeurd. Het bedrag van 70 miljard euro is een schatting van de totale investeringsbehoefte, waarbij zowel overheids- als particuliere middelen een rol spelen. Het voorstel voorziet niet in een specifiek fonds van die omvang.<\/p>\n

Elke ge\u00efnvesteerde euro kan het dubbele, of zelfs tien keer zoveel, opleveren als je rekening houdt met de schade die daarmee kan worden voorkomen, aldus de Commissie. Zij ziet hierin een grote kans voor Europese bedrijven om te innoveren, te groeien en mogelijk wereldleiders te worden op het gebied van klimaataanpassing.<\/span><\/p>\n
