Waymo, het bedrijf van Alphabet dat zich bezighoudt met zelfrijdende taxi\u2019s, voegt de Toyota bZ4X toe aan zijn robotaxi-assortiment. Toyota gaat in Japan een op maat gemaakte versie van de elektrische SUV bouwen, waarbij de \u2018Waymo Driver\u2018 direct in de productielijn wordt ge\u00efntegreerd, en in 2027 zal daar een testvloot in gebruik worden genomen.<\/p>\n

Het is het eerste daadwerkelijke voertuig dat voortkomt uit de samenwerking die de twee bedrijven vorig jaar hebben gesloten. Hierdoor beschikt Waymo over een in Japan gebouwde auto voor de lancering in Tokio, waarna het Verenigd Koninkrijk en andere markten zullen volgen.<\/p>\n

Toen Waymo en Toyota in april 2025 hun samenwerking voor het eerst aankondigden, ging het om een voorlopige overeenkomst om de mogelijkheden van samenwerking op het gebied van autonoom rijden te \u201cverkennen\u201d, ook in particuliere voertuigen. Veel goede bedoelingen, maar geen concreet product.<\/p>\n

Dat is nog eens een product. Volgens de aankondiging van Waymo gaat Toyota de voertuigen produceren in zijn fabriek in Takaoka, in Toyota City, in de prefectuur Aichi, en zal Waymo zijn hardware voor autonoom rijden op diezelfde locatie installeren en integreren, in plaats van deze elders achteraf in te bouwen.<\/p>\n

Veranderingen gericht op de rijder<\/h4>\n

De robotaxi bZ4X krijgt een aantal op de passagiers gerichte aanpassingen: extra beenruimte achterin, automatische deuren, een elektrisch bedienbare achterklep en sfeerverlichting. Waymo heeft geen gegevens vrijgegeven over de specificaties van de sensoren, de productieaantallen of de kosten per voertuig.<\/p>\n

In 2027 staan de activiteiten in het teken van het testen en valideren van de autonome bZ4X-vloot in Japan. Het Verenigd Koninkrijk en \u201candere Waymo-markten\u201d volgen in latere jaren, zonder dat daar concrete data aan zijn gekoppeld.<\/p>\n

De twee bedrijven geven ook aan dat ze zullen blijven werken aan autonome technologie voor de personenauto\u2019s van Toyota, evenals aan veiligheidsprojecten met Woven by Toyota, de softwaretak van de autofabrikant. Dmitri Dolgov, mede-CEO van Waymo, zei dat \u201cToyota\u2019s streven naar nul verkeersongevallen bij ons bij Waymo sterk weerklank vindt.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cToyota zet zich in voor het realiseren van een samenleving zonder verkeersongevallen en wil een mobiliteitsbedrijf worden dat mobiliteit voor iedereen biedt,\u201d aldus Hiroki Nakajima, bestuurslid en Executive Vice President van Toyota Motor Corporation, die hieraan toevoegde: \u201cWij delen met Waymo een sterk gevoel van doelgerichtheid en een gemeenschappelijke visie om de veiligheid te bevorderen door middel van technologie voor geautomatiseerd rijden, en wij zijn ervan overtuigd dat deze samenwerking ertoe kan bijdragen dat onze oplossingen voor meer mensen over de hele wereld beschikbaar komen, waardoor we weer een stap dichter bij een samenleving zonder ongevallen komen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Belangrijke toevoeging voor Waymo<\/h4>\n

De timing sluit aan bij de plannen van Waymo voor Japan. In september maakte Waymo bekend dat het in 2027 in Tokio volledig zelfrijdende commerci\u00eble ritten wil aanbieden in samenwerking met taxibedrijf Nihon Kotsu en de ride-hailing-app GO, waarbij het aantal voertuigen zal worden uitgebreid tot ongeveer 100, onder voorbehoud van goedkeuring door de toezichthouder.<\/p>\n

In de VS bestaat de vloot van Waymo nog steeds grotendeels uit Jaguar I-Pace-SUV\u2019s, een model dat Jaguar niet meer produceert. Het is al door de door Zeekr gebouwde Ojai-bestelwagen toe te voegen<\/a> en de Hyundai Ioniq 5; naar verluidt is Hyundai in onderhandeling om tegen 2028 maximaal 50.000 Ioniq 5-robotaxi\u2019s te leveren.<\/p>\n

Met de bZ4X zijn het er nu vier. Het is ook niet de eerste bZ4X-robotaxi van Toyota: Toyota en Pony.ai zijn eerder dit jaar in China begonnen met de massaproductie van op de bZ4X gebaseerde robotaxi\u2019s.<\/p>\n

En Waymo breidt zijn activiteiten uit. Het bedrijf verzorgt nu meer dan 500.000 betaalde ritten per week in 15 Amerikaanse steden, en heeft eerder deze maand Toronto gekozen als eerste Canadese stad, waar het in 2028 passagiers wil vervoeren.<\/p>\n

De grootste beperking voor Waymo op dit moment zijn de auto\u2019s. Het bedrijf maakt gebruik van een wagenpark dat is gebaseerd op een Jaguar-model dat niet meer wordt geproduceerd, en elke nieuwe autofabrikant waarmee het een overeenkomst sluit, voegt productiecapaciteit toe die Waymo niet zelf hoeft op te bouwen. Toyota is de best verkopende autofabrikant ter wereld.
