Stellantis voert een herschikking door in zijn Europese ontwerpmanagement: de Belg Pierre Leclercq wordt aangesteld als hoofd van Opel en Vauxhall, terwijl voormalig Renault-ontwerper Sandeep Bhambra de leiding krijgt over zowel Citro\u00ebn als DS Automobiles.<\/p>\n

De veranderingen maken deel uit van een bredere strategie onder leiding van Gilles Vidal, die toezicht houdt op het ontwerp van acht Europese merken. Maar kan Stellantis hun individuele identiteit behouden nu ze in toenemende mate technologie, platforms en management delen?<\/p>\n

De herschikking, die op 2 november van kracht wordt, maakt deel uit van een bredere reorganisatie die van start ging toen Vidal in oktober 2025 terugkeerde van Renault. Zijn doel is om elk merk een eigen karakter te geven, van de betaalbare Fiat-stadsauto\u2019s tot de premium Maserati\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Dat vormt een aanzienlijke uitdaging voor een groep die is opgebouwd rond schaalvoordelen. Doordat de technische basis steeds meer op elkaar gaat lijken, moet het ontwerp een groot deel van de onderscheidende factoren bieden die klanten daadwerkelijk opmerken.<\/p>\n

Van de BMW X6 naar Opel<\/h4>\n

Voor de Belgische ontwerper Pierre Leclercq (54) betekent de overstap naar Opel een nieuw hoofdstuk in een internationale carri\u00e8re die hem onder meer bij BMW, Great Wall Motors, Kia en Citro\u00ebn heeft gebracht.<\/p>\n

Zijn bekendste prestatie blijft de eerste BMW X6, die heeft bijgedragen aan de totstandkoming van de categorie SUV-coup\u00e9. Hij werkte ook mee aan de tweede generatie van de BMW X5 en werd in 2011 hoofd van BMW M Design.<\/p>\n

Bij Citro\u00ebn, waar hij in 2018 in dienst trad, gaf Leclercq leiding aan het ontwerp van modellen zoals de nieuwe C3, C3 Aircross en C5 Aircross, evenals onconventionele concepten zoals Oli en ELO.<\/p>\n

Hij volgt nu Mark Adams op, die na bijna 25 jaar bij Opel met pensioen gaat. Adams heeft de moderne identiteit van het merk vormgegeven aan de hand van de \u2018Bold and Pure\u2019-filosofie, met onder meer de kenmerkende Vizor-voorkant en de Pure Panel-cockpit.<\/p>\n

Zijn invloed zal blijven voortduren. Het onlangs onthulde Opel STX Concept geeft al een voorproefje van de volgende generatie Opel-design. Leclercq neemt dus een ontwerprichting over waarvan de basis grotendeels al is gelegd.<\/p>\n

E\u00e9n ontwerper, twee Franse merken<\/h4>\n

De benoeming van Sandeep Bhambra is waarschijnlijk de verandering met de grootste gevolgen. Hoewel hij pas in april 2026 bij Stellantis in dienst is getreden, neemt hij nu de leiding over zowel Citro\u00ebn als DS Automobiles op zich.<\/p>\n

De in India geboren ontwerper werkte eerder voor Mahindra, Tata, Peugeot en Renault. Tot zijn portfolio behoren onder meer bijdragen aan het Peugeot Onyx-concept en de 2008, naast zijn leidende rol op het gebied van geavanceerd ontwerp bij Renault-projecten zoals de Sc\u00e9nic Vision, de Embl\u00e8me en de spectaculaire Renault 5 Turbo 3E.<\/p>\n

Hij volgt Leclercq op bij Citro\u00ebn en Thierry Metroz bij DS, wiens werk heeft bijgedragen aan het vormgeven van de identiteit van het Franse premiummerk. Metroz gaat een functie op het gebied van Europese ontwerpstrategie bekleden, waarin hij Vidal zal ondersteunen.<\/p>\n

Citro\u00ebn en DS hebben al dezelfde CEO, Xavier Chardon. Nu hebben ze ook dezelfde hoofdontwerper, hoewel ze zich op heel verschillende doelgroepen richten.<\/p>\n

Citro\u00ebn heeft behoefte aan betaalbare, praktische en originele auto\u2019s. DS moet kopers ervan overtuigen dat het echte Franse premiumalternatieven biedt. Het behouden van dat onderscheid wordt de grootste uitdaging voor Bhambra.<\/p>\n

De andere Europese ontwerpdirecteuren<\/h4>\n

De verantwoordelijkheden van Vidal reiken veel verder dan de Franse en Duitse merken. Peugeot blijft onder leiding staan van Matthias Hossann, die bekendstaat om de nieuwste ontwerpgeneraties van de 308 en 3008.<\/p>\n

In Itali\u00eb staat Fran\u00e7ois Leboine aan het hoofd van de ontwerpafdeling van Fiat, nadat hij naam heeft gemaakt met het Renault 5-prototype en de Fiat Grande Panda. Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos geeft leiding aan Alfa Romeo, na zijn succesvolle werk bij Seat en Cupra, waaronder de Formentor.<\/p>\n

Gianni Colonello leidt de heropleving van het ontwerp bij Lancia, waaronder de nieuwe Gamma, terwijl Klaus Busse vorm blijft geven aan Maserati, waarvan het assortiment onder meer de MC20-supercar en de GranTurismo omvat.<\/p>\n

Deze ontwerpers blijven verantwoordelijk voor hun eigen merken, maar Vidal zorgt voor de overkoepelende Europese creatieve leiding. Nu Citro\u00ebn en DS Bhambra delen, zijn de verantwoordelijkheden voor het merkontwerp van acht merken nu verdeeld over zeven leidinggevenden.<\/p>\n

Een andere organisatie in Amerika<\/h4>\n

Aan de andere kant van de Atlantische Oceaan hanteert Stellantis een vergelijkbare regionale structuur. Scott Krugger, die in juli 2025 werd benoemd tot hoofd Design Noord-Amerika, heeft de leiding over Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep en Ram.<\/p>\n

Eerder gaf hij leiding aan het exterieurontwerp bij Dodge en werkte hij bij Alfa Romeo en Jeep in Europa. Het is zijn taak om de identiteit van de Amerikaanse merken te behouden, van het offroad-erfgoed van Jeep tot het pick-upkarakter van Ram en het prestatiegerichte imago van Dodge.<\/p>\n

Boven zowel Krugger als Vidal staat Ralph Gilles, de wereldwijde Chief Design Officer van Stellantis, die verantwoordelijk is voor de co\u00f6rdinatie van de wereldwijde ontwerpstrategie van de groep.<\/p>\n

Het systeem combineert regionale creatieve autonomie met centraal toezicht, in plaats van elk merk \u00e9\u00e9n universele stijltaal op te leggen.<\/p>\n

Wiens visie zal de overhand krijgen?<\/h4>\n

De onmiddellijke gevolgen van de Europese herschikking zullen wellicht beperkt zijn. De ontwikkelingscycli van voertuigen duren doorgaans meerdere jaren, wat betekent dat veel modellen die in 2027 en 2028 op de markt komen, al in een vergevorderd stadium van ontwikkeling verkeren.<\/p>\n

Leclercq en Bhambra zullen in eerste instantie projecten leiden die door hun voorgangers zijn vormgegeven. Hun eigen creatieve stempel zal wellicht pas rond 2030 volledig tot uiting komen.<\/p>\n

Voor Stellantis gaat de uitdaging verder dan alleen een wisseling van de wacht aan de top. Het delen van onderdelen is economisch gezien zinvol, maar kopers kiezen niet voor een Citro\u00ebn, Opel, Alfa Romeo of Maserati vanwege het Stellantis-logo.<\/p>\n

Ze kiezen voor die merken omdat elk merk iets anders belooft.
