Volgens twee nieuwe rapporten die maandag zijn gepubliceerd door het International Cryosphere Climate Initiative (ICCI), in samenwerking met het Milieuprogramma van de VN (UNEP), smelten de ijskappen op Groenland en Antarctica ongeveer zes keer zo snel als\u00a0de jaren negentig.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wetenschappers waarschuwen dat Een opwarming van de aarde van meer dan 1,5 \u00b0C zal \u201conomkeerbare\u201d gevolgen hebben voor gletsjers, zee-ijs en alle permanent bevroren oppervlakken op aarde. <\/span>Volgens hen zou de opwarming op lange termijn idealiter weer tot onder 1 graad moeten worden teruggebracht. <\/span><\/p>\n

In 2015 stelde de internationale gemeenschap zich ten doel de opwarming van de aarde te beperken tot 1,5 graad Celsius boven het pre-industri\u00eble niveau, om zo de ergste gevolgen van de klimaatverandering te voorkomen.<\/p>\n

\u2018Overshoot\u2019<\/h4>\n

Hoewel de doelstelling nog niet officieel is gemist, stellen de Verenigde Naties dat deze niet meer kan worden gehaald en dat deze, in ieder geval tijdelijk, zal worden overschreden \u2013 een scenario dat bekendstaat als \u201covershoot\u201d.\u201d<\/p>\n

Om de overschrijding op de lange termijn terug te draaien, zou de mensheid uiteindelijk een fase van negatieve emissies moeten ingaan, waarin meer kooldioxide (CO2) uit de atmosfeer wordt verwijderd dan er wordt uitgestoten. Een sterkere en langdurigere opwarming van meer dan 1,5 graad zal ook het risico op aardverschuivingen en bosbranden vergroten.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sommige gevolgen zijn nu al zichtbaar, <\/span>met een opwarming van 1,37 graden ten opzichte van het pre-industri\u00eble niveau (1850-1900). <\/span>Zo is bijvoorbeeld al een vijfde van de gletsjers in Zwitserland verdwenen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Langzaam herstel<\/h4>\n

De wetenschappers wijzen er ook op dat \u2013 zelfs als de opwarming later weer zou kunnen worden teruggedrongen \u2013 het herstel \u201czeer traag\u201d zou verlopen.\u201d <\/span>Dat zou wel eens enkele decennia of zelfs eeuwen kunnen duren.<\/span><\/p>\n

We stevenen momenteel af op een opwarming van 2,8 graden Celsius. Als deze ontwikkeling zich ongewijzigd voortzet, zou de zeespiegel tegen 2150 met 5 centimeter per jaar kunnen stijgen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Afgelopen zomer eiste het instorten van een gletsjer in Nepal meer dan 1.500 levens.
