Sterling Anderson, Chief Product Officer bij GM, die in 2015 en 2016 leiding gaf aan het Autopilot-programma van Tesla, zegt dat het afstappen van radar ten gunste van een volledig op camera\u2019s gebaseerd autonoom rijsysteem \u201ceen vreemde, bijna religieuze houding is die de natuurwetten negeert\u201d.<\/p>\n

Het is de meest ongezouten kritiek tot nu toe op Tesla\u2019s strategie om uitsluitend op camera\u2019s te vertrouwen, afkomstig van iemand die heeft meegewerkt aan de ontwikkeling van de oorspronkelijke Autopilot. En deze kritiek komt op het moment dat Tesla in Austin Cybercabs, die uitsluitend op camera\u2019s werken, in de zelfrijdende dienst inzet.<\/p>\n

Anderson deed deze uitspraken een week geleden in een interview met The Verge, na het technologie-evenement van GM in New York de week daarvoor. Toen hem werd gevraagd of GM op termijn zou kunnen overstappen op een aanpak die uitsluitend op beeldherkenning is gebaseerd, zoals die van Tesla, liet hij weinig ruimte voor interpretatie.<\/p>\n

\u201cAls je het beperkt tot alleen visuele waarneming, wijst de natuurkunde erop dat je in bepaalde situaties in de problemen komt,\u201d zei Anderson. Hij voegde eraan toe dat radar zo goedkoop is dat het geen zin heeft om het weg te laten, en dat \u201ccamera\u2019s niet door dichte mist heen kunnen kijken of de momentane snelheid kunnen meten, zoals radar dat wel kan. Het beschikken over een multisensorsysteem biedt duidelijke veiligheidsvoordelen die de natuurkunde simpelweg vereist.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hij zei ook dat lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) ervoor zorgt dat camerasystemen sneller beter worden wanneer beide systemen samen worden getraind. Dat spreekt het argument van Tesla rechtstreeks tegen dat camera\u2019s in combinatie met vlootgegevens alles zijn wat je nodig hebt.<\/p>\n

Veteraan in de automobielindustrie<\/h4>\n

Sterling Anderson is geen CEO van een lidar-startup die zijn eigen belangen promoot. Hij gaf leiding aan het Model X-programma bij Tesla en stond vervolgens aan het roer van Autopilot tijdens de beginjaren, voordat hij medeoprichter werd van het zelfrijdende autobedrijf Aurora. GM nam hem in 2025 in dienst als chief product officer (CPO), en Bloomberg meldde vorig jaar dat Mary Barra hem ziet als een van de belangrijkste kanshebbers om de volgende CEO van GM te worden.<\/p>\n

Zijn strategie bij GM loopt haaks op die van Tesla. De Cadillac Escalade IQ zal in 2028 het \u201ceyes-off\u201d-systeem van GM introduceren, met lidar, radar en camera\u2019s.<\/p>\n

In hetzelfde interview haalde hij ook uit naar een andere gewoonte van Tesla. Anderson zei dat hij marketingtaal waarin wordt gesproken over \u201cogen-weg\u201d volledig vermijdt, met het argument dat een rijhulpsysteem dat erg capabel aanvoelt, bestuurders al tot zelfgenoegzaamheid aanzet. Dat is het kernprobleem met de verkoop door Tesla van \u2018Full Self-Driving (Supervised)\u2019.<\/p>\n

Zichtbaarheid is essentieel<\/h4>\n

Tesla is in mei 2021 begonnen met het verwijderen van de radar uit de Model 3 en Model Y. Het Tesla Vision-systeem werd gelanceerd met een aantal beperkingen: Autosteer was beperkt tot 75 mph, er gold een grotere minimale volgafstand en de functies Smart Summon en Emergency Lane Departure Avoidance waren bij aflevering uitgeschakeld. In 2022 werden de ultrasone sensoren verwijderd.<\/p>\n

Het besluit werd binnen Tesla niet unaniem genomen. Voormalige medewerkers vertelden dat ingenieurs probeerden Elon Musk ervan te overtuigen om radar niet te schrappen, maar dat hij hun bezwaren terzijde schoof. Musk zei destijds tegen de gespecialiseerde website Electrek dat \u201ceen radar met een zeer hoge resolutie beter zou zijn dan puur beeldmateriaal, maar dat zo\u2019n radar niet bestaat\u201d. Electrek stelde toen dat er tegenwoordig wel degelijk tal van radars met hoge resolutie bestaan.<\/p>\n

Maar het grotere probleem is datgene waar Anderson op wijst: zichtbaarheid. In maart heeft de NHTSA haar onderzoek naar het FSD-systeem van Tesla onder omstandigheden met beperkt zicht opgewaardeerd tot een technische analyse die betrekking heeft op 3.203.754 voertuigen, de laatste stap v\u00f3\u00f3r een terugroepactie.<\/p>\n

Het onderzoek telt nu negen ongevallen, waaronder een voetganger die in november 2023 om het leven kwam. De NHTSA constateerde dat de detectie van camerabeperkingen door het FSD-systeem \u201cgeen rekening hield met veelvoorkomende wegomstandigheden die het zicht van de camera belemmerden\u201d, waaronder schittering door de zon, mist en stof in de lucht, en bestuurders pas vlak voor de ongevallen waarschuwde. Radar heeft geen last van schittering door de zon. Dat is juist het nut van redundantie.<\/p>\n

Anderson heeft de betere argumenten, en hij is beter dan bijna wie dan ook in de positie om dat te zeggen. Hij leidde Autopilot toen het nog gebruikmaakte van radar.<\/p>\n

Het geval waarbij alleen het gezichtsvermogen betrokken is<\/h4>\n

Electrek heeft zijn twijfels over de aanpak van Tesla. \u201cHet concept van \u201dalleen beeldverwerking\u2019 was altijd gebaseerd op een mooi idee: mensen rijden met twee ogen, dus camera\u2019s en voldoende AI zouden het werk moeten kunnen doen. Maar mensen krijgen ook ongelukken in mist en bij verblinding, en de belofte was altijd dat het systeem veel veiliger zou zijn dan mensen, niet alleen even goed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHet verwijderen van een goedkope sensor die de snelheid rechtstreeks meet, daarbij je eigen ingenieurs terzijde schuiven, en uiteindelijk een NHTSA-onderzoek naar 3,2 miljoen voertuigen uitlokken vanwege camera\u2019s die niet kunnen vaststellen wanneer ze geen zicht hebben, is geen engineering volgens de basisprincipes. Het is een standpunt dat Musk in 2019 innam toen hij lidar een \u201czinloze onderneming\u201d noemde, en dat hij sindsdien blijft verdedigen\u201d, meldt Electrek.<\/p>\n

\u201cHet gedrag van Tesla is sowieso veranderd. Het bedrijf stelt nu zijn eigen vlootkaarten op, nadat het die jarenlang had bespot, en zijn Robotaxi rijdt net als die van alle anderen binnen geofences. Ondertussen heeft Waymo, met lidar, radar en camera\u2019s, ongeveer 271 miljoen mijlen afgelegd met uitsluitend passagiers aan boord. Tesla heeft sinds het in januari is begonnen met het terugtrekken van veiligheidsmonitors ongeveer 3 miljoen mijlen zonder bestuurder afgelegd\u201d, concludeert Electrek.<\/p>\n
