BMW has lifted the veil on its new smaller SUV-Coupé – or Sports Activity Coupé, as Munich refers to it. The new X2 changes from a smaller, stubbier version of the X1 to a literal coupé version of the new X1. Like its brother, it also comes as an all-electric version, under the name of iX2.
Thanks to better aerodynamics from its sloping roofline, the new iX2 offers more range than the iX1, up to 449 km. In addition, BMW introduces a new rear light design and an optional illuminated kidney grill.
Smallest SAC
Following in the footsteps of the BMW X6 and X4, the new X2 is the smallest Sports Activity Coupé that Munich produces. While the previous generation was some brother from another mother to the X1, this new model is literally the coupé version of the recent BMW X1. Therefore, both cars share the same chassis, wheelbase, and powertrains.

Design touches differ between the two, starting with the completely different rear end. In addition to a sloping roofline, the new X2 presents a different rear light arrangement with vertical accents. Most noticeably, there is a large spoiler on the tailgate. We’ll let you decide if this is good taste…or not!
Let there be light
Furthermore, BMW offers a slightly different front-end treatment to the X2. The newcomer gets slimmer lights, including the twin vertical daytime running lights, and a larger kidney grill. As an option, this larger can get its contour illuminated.
Inside, there is not much difference between the two small SUVs from Munich. The Curved Display on the dashboard now hosts BMW’s Operating system 9, with adapted graphics and easier climate controls. The roofline impacts roominess but in a good way. The new X2 is 20 cm longer than its predecessor and even 50 mm longer than the X1, interior space is greater and boot space grows up to 560 liters or 525 liters on the electric version.

First-ever iX2
Yes, indeed, the new BMW X2 comes with an electric powertrain. Baptized iX2 xDrive30, it’s powered by two electric motors – one on each axle – producing together 313 hp and 494 Nm of torque. This gives it a respectable 0 to 100 km/h of 5.6 seconds.
Electricity comes from a 64,8 kWh (net) battery located under the floor. This is where the new iX2 sloping roofline and better aerodynamics help: it has a maximum range of up to 449 km (WLTP). That’s ten more kilometers than the iX1 on which it’s based. Fast charging is a relatively slow rate of up to 130 kW, but it’ll get from 10 to 80 % in 29 minutes. AC charging is 11 kW as standard, but there’s a 22-kW charger on the option list.

ICE X2
Like the BMW iX1, another version of the iX2 with less power and more range should come to market next year. That being said, the new X2 also comes with conventional diesel and petrol powertrains, ranging from a diesel 4-cylinder (sDrive18d) to a mild hybrid 1.5-litre three-cylinder (sDrive20i) and even to a turbo four-cylinder with 300 hp (M35i).
