Harald Seidel, President of DAF Trucks, takes over from Martin Lundstedt (Volvo Group) as the new chairman of the Commercial Vehicle Board of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) for 2024. He will be in charge of defending the truckmakers’ interests in Europe.
The ACEA unites the European vehicle manufacturers, including commercial vehicles. Luca de Meo (Renault Group) is the current President of the ACEA, the association also has a Commercial Vehicle Board of Directors which elects a Chairperson. This job has been held by Martin Lundstedt, the CEO of Volvo Group, since 2022, who has now passed the torch to Harald Seidel. There is also a Director General, Sigrid de Vries, who manages the day-to-day operation of the ACEA.
Significant challenges for the commercial vehicle market in 2024
Seidel has been DAF’s President since 2022 and will now have to defend his industry’s interests in 2024 with CO2 targets, the Euro 7 emission standards for commercial vehicles, and the Weights and Dimensions Directive (with potentially new maximum permitted weights for electric commercial vehicles) as the most significant challenges ahead.
Seidel has hit the ground running by stating: “Let there be no doubt: truck and bus manufacturers are dedicating all their efforts to help decarbonize road transport. But policymakers must match the ambitious targets for vehicle manufacturers with equally ambitious conditions to enable their market uptake.”
“Our efforts are being impeded by a lack of three crucial elements: charging and hydrogen refilling infrastructure, effective carbon pricing schemes, and measures to support transport operators to replace conventional vehicles with zero-emission models,” Seidel added.
