Geely has launched the second electric model in its new Galaxy lineup, following the E8 electric saloon. The Galaxy E5 is a mid-size electric SUV with an affordable price tag, modern tech on board, and the company’s newest Aegis Short Blade Battery, which promises a 1 million-km lifespan.
The Geely Galaxy E5 challenges other China-built electric SUVs like the BYD Atto 3. It is 4,615 mm long, 1,901 mm wide, and 1,670 mm high, with a 2,750 mm wheelbase. It is built on the GEA platform, derived from the SEA platform used in several European models like the Smart #1 and Volvo EX30.
New-generation 1 million-km battery
Under the hood, two powertrain variants are available. A 160 kW (218 hp) electric motor comes as standard, which integrates all critical components in one drive unit on the front axle, weighing just 79.8 kg.
The battery, which is placed in the floor, is Geely’s new-generation ‘Aegis Short Blade Battery’, competing with BYD’s Blade battery. It features lithium-iron-phosphate chemistry (LFP), with a 192 Wh/kg energy density and a lifespan of 3,500 charging cycles, which equates to around 1 million km without significant wear, according to Geely.
Two battery sizes are available: 49.52 kWh for a CLTC range of 440 km or 60.22 kWh with a CLTC range of 530 km. Charging from 10-80 percent takes 26 minutes, which is also quick for an LFP battery.
Practical interior
On the inside, the dashboard is less futuristic than the E8 saloon. A traditional (but still flattened) steering wheel is present, with two separate displays for the driver and infotainment system, rather than the panoramic 45-inch touchscreen from the E8. Geely also promises lots of storage space, including drawers underneath the seats.
Low price, international launch coming soon?
The Geely Galaxy E5 is already available to pre-order in China, with prices ranging from 112,800 to 148,800 yuan (€14,450 to €19,100). An international launch is on the cards, but no specific launch dates have been given.
