BYD’s Fang Cheng Bao Tai 3: an offroad family EV for a low price

BYD’s off-road sub-brand, Fang Cheng Bao, has unveiled its newest entry-level model: the Tai 3. It’s a relatively compact SUV aimed at families, with an all-electric drivetrain, rugged looks, and a high-tech interior. The price for all of this? Under €18,000 in China.

BYD introduced Fang Cheng Bao (also spelled Fangchengbao) in 2023, focusing on powerful and luxurious off-road SUVs. Two models have been launched up until now: the Bao 5, a mid-size plug-in hybrid SUV, and the Bao 8, a full-size PHEV SUV with similar looks. Now, a third model is being added to the mix.

Compact SUV, but rich in features

The new arrival does not come as a surprise, as BYD previously unveiled the Super 3 concept car, which is based on the Tai 3. Contrary to its bigger brothers, the Tai 3 is a fully electric SUV in the compact segment, although it isn’t that small: 4,605 mm long, 1,900 mm wide, and 1,720 mm tall on a 2,745 mm wheelbase.

This provides ample space for up to five passengers on board, who can enjoy comfort features such as a 15.6-inch infotainment screen, double wireless charging trays, a built-in refrigerator, and even a karaoke function.

RWD or AWD with a 501 km range

Multiple drivetrain options are available, but every single one has a CLTC range of 501 km. The entry-level RWD Intelligent Driving Pro (200 kW/272 hp) has a 72.96 kWh battery, while the top-spec 4WD versions (310 kW/422 hp) get a 78.72 kWh battery and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/hour in 4.9 seconds.

But the party tricks don’t end there. The Fang Cheng Bao Tai 3 also features BYD’s God’s Eye C semi-autonomous driving system, which the Chinese manufacturer promised to bring to all its new models earlier this year.

And if you need an actual eye in the sky, the Tai 3 also comes with the roof-mounted Ling Yuang drone system, built in collaboration with DJI. The drone storage box can open automatically up to 25 km/hour, allowing hobbyists and content creators to get the perfect driving shot while on a road trip.

From €17,800 in China

All of this comes at a very reasonable price. The base model Fang Cheng Bao Tai 3 RWD Intelligent Driving Pro is available for 139,800 yuan (€17,800), while the top-spec 4WD Drone Version costs 203,800 yuan (€25,900). That makes the Tai 3 twice as cheap as the Bao 5, available for 289,800 yuan (€36,800). An interesting addition to the European model range?
