Is this Zeekr X the one for Europe?

Zeekr took the wraps from the prototype car that seems poised to accelerate the brand’s launch in Europe. While it was thought to be called the 003, the compact crossover is dubbed X. The launch for China is scheduled for the end of the year, after which the rival for the Volkswagen ID.3 could hit foreign shores.

Zeekr, part of the Geely Group and a sister brand to Volvo and Polestar, hasn’t been shy about its European ambitions. However, as its market introduction planned for this year hardly coincides with the production schedule for the X, it seems likely that the 001 shooting brake will be the forerunning model.

Scalable Electric Architecture

As for this X, nothing official has been confirmed, but the dimensions and the all-electric driveline would make it a likely candidate to rival the Volkswagen ID.3 (or the Cupra Born if you’re more fond of a Hispanic touch).

The biggest hurdle might be the awaited small Volvo EX30 and the already launched Smart #1. Belonging to the same family, all these models share their architecture (SEA for Scalable Electric Architecture) and technology. Still, both Volvo and Smart are badges carrying more luster and legacy in Europe.

So, even if the brand has only released the first pictures, showing the definitive design (with a Volvo-esque sweeping shoulder line toward the C-pillar but no interior yet) and featuring flush door handles, technical details remain somewhat of a guess. However, the dimensions are known, with a length of 4,40 meters and a width of 1,8 meters. The wheelbase is 2,75 meters.

Debut in April

Since the latter is identical to the Smart #1, it is likely that the Chinese newcomer will get the same powertrain options as its sibling. This implies a battery pack of 66 kWh and a choice between rear-wheel drive (single motor) and four-wheel drive (dual motor). Output ranges from 272 hp to 428 hp.

The young Zeekr name was founded under the wings of the gigantic Geely Group only two years ago. It holds the position of a luxurious sub-brand trying to compete with Tesla and, on its home turf, Nio.

In its first year, the brand managed to sell 70 000 vehicles. Next to the 001 and the X, the range also consists of a large MPV called 009. Most likely, that model will remain China-only. The Zeekr X will make its public debut at Auto China, Shanghai, in April.
