Chinese government leaks pictures of Cadillac Optiq

It has become somewhat common these days for the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MITT) to leak pictures of future vehicles. The latest is the future Cadillac Optiq, a new entry-level electric SUV that will take place under the Lyriq and be built in China. Expected to go on sale in 2024, it’ll compete against the Tesla Model Y.

Unfortunately for manufacturers trying to keep quiet about their future models, part of the regulatory homologation process in China includes a photo shoot at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MITT). Those pictures are thereafter put into a catalog, which is open for public feedback. The latest victim of that process is the Cadillac Optiq, reported by CnEVPost.

Smaller than the Lyriq

In the US and China, Cadillac has already started its electric revolution with the Lyriq, built on GM’s Ultium platform. The future Optiq is set to sit under this large SUV, with a length of 4,8 m and a wheelbase of 2,95 m. Therefore, the future entry-level electric Cadillac will compete with the likes of the Tesla Model Y.

The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MITT) has also unveiled a few technical details. The Optiq will be available with two powertrain options, 150 kW and 180 kW, while its battery packs will be supplied by a joint venture between SAIC and CATL. Furthermore, the future electric SUV will be built in SAIC’s plant in Wuhan, China.

China only?

Cadillac hasn’t commented on the pictures and information revealed by the Chinese government. No words either on plans to bring the entry-level electric SUV to the US or European markets. Currently, it looks like the Optiq could be a China-only model.
