It’s finally on sale in Europe, the MG everyone is waiting to revive the image of the iconic roadsters from its British heritage: the fully electric Cyberster. The basic 2WD version can be ordered in Belgium for €65,490, and the most potent, 4WD GT version, featuring 375 kW (510 pk), starts at €69.990. Deliveries should start half of October.
Images and preliminary information of MG’s all-electric roadster were released in April 2024, before its official debut at the Chinese motor show Auto Shanghai later that month. Then, it became clear that this new version is, in every sense, a modern take on the old MG formula. The most prominent external feature is, without doubt, its electric gull-wing doors.
Earning its British wings
It’s designed by Advanced Design Director Carl Gotham, who joined MG’s Chinese mother company, SAIC, in 2006 as a senior designer, and this SAIC Design Advanced London team. It earned its ‘British wings’ in an 18-month development program in Longbridge, where the MG4 was also finetuned.
The result is a quite beautiful ‘British’ roadster with strong performance and all modern conveniences, like an electric soft top that opens and closes in 15 seconds while driving at 48 km.
2WD and 4WD
Its base version, called ‘Cyberster Trophy Extended Range,’ is a rear-wheel-drive two-seater roadster like in the old days but far bigger. It has a length of 4.54 meters and a wheelbase of 2.69 meters. And you still get a luggage space of 249 liters, enough for two trolleys for the weekend.
The motor delivers 250 kW (340 pk) and 475 Nm of torque, propelling the roadster to 100 km/hour in 5.0 seconds and to a top speed of 195 km/hour.
Its more potent brother, the Cyberster GT, has 375 kW (510 pk) and 725 Nm torque. That’s more power than the most powerful MG ever in history. To compare, an MGB with a 3.5-liter V8 engine from 1975 had 192 hp. The GT needs only 3.2 seconds to reach 100, with a top speed of 200 km/hour.
Ranges from 442 to 506 km
The MG Cyberster has a 77 kWh (74.4 kWh usable) battery pack. In the case of the Trophy, this battery capacity guarantees a WLTP driving range of 506 kilometers, while the GT can travel 442 kilometers on a single charge. Fast charging (DC) can be done at a maximum of 144 kW, so count on 38 minutes to recharge the battery from 10 to 80%.
The roadster has six exterior colors: Ivory White, Andes Grey, Cosmic Silver, Diamond Red, Inca Yellow, or Mystic Teal Blue. It also has a soft top in black or red. The interior has two choices: two-tone black and red or black and grey.
High-tech interior
Inside, it’s ‘high tech’ with three screens: a 10.25-inch display for the driver flanked by two 7-inch ones. Expect electric adjustable, heated seats with memory and a heated steering wheel. Also on the standard equipment list are Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, an 8-speaker Bose sound system, a DAB radio, voice recognition, and a 360-degree parking camera.
As ‘mandatory’ today in a modern EV, the Cyberster has a myriad of driver aid systems (ADAS), including Lane Change and Lane Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Detection, Active Emergency Braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, Traffic Jam Assist, Intelligent Speed Assist and Intelligent Headlight Control.
