About 42% of Dutch citizens older than 18 own one or more electric bicycles, electric motor scooters, or light electric vehicles (LEV). Together, all those vehicles represent 12,4 billion euros. However, in 2021, this was ‘only’ €10 billion – an increase of 24% compared to the previous year. The figures come from Multiscope’s E-bike Monitor, a large-scale survey with 5 000 Dutch respondents.
E-bikes represent the most significant part of the market (€11,8 billion), followed by electric motor scooters (€420 million) and light electric vehicles (€220 million). Today, about 5,5 million Dutch citizens possess an e-bike, 0,9 million more than in 2021 (4,6 million).
Fastest growth
Last year, prices of new electric bicycles increased the most: from €1 876 to €2 036. Prices of used electric city bikes also went up: from €805 to €992, an increase of 23%. While the markets for electric bicycles and motor scooters grew by 24% and 27%, respectively, the demand for light electric vehicles grew relatively faster (69%).
Multiscope is specialized in online market research. For this E-bike Monitor, a survey was conducted among 5 063 Dutch respondents older than 18, a representative sample of the Dutch population.
