Brussels: 20% of checked transport vehicles in violation

Brussels Mobility regularly checks Brussels goods and passenger transport to increase the safety of all road users. The overview of checks carried out over the past three months shows that 20% were in violation.

In the past three months, Brussels Mobility carried out 12 control actions in cooperation with various police zones. A total of 718 vehicles were checked. Brussels Mobility inspectors, by the way, have the powers of Agent or Officer of the Judicial Police.

More than 700 vehicles checked

In the process, 91 warnings were issued, 81 official reports were drawn up, and 18 loads were transferred due to overloading. Two vehicles were put in order after technical inspection, and three licenses were revoked due to paid passenger transport. 20+ of the vehicles checked thus committed an offense.

According to Brussels Mobility, this percentage shows that there is a clear need to continue to carry out checks and raise awareness of road safety risks, especially in the transport sector.

Transport sector strikes a bad note

“Brussels Mobility mainly notes problems with the loading of vans and trucks: lack of lashing straps and overloading. In addition, a lot of drivers are unable to show all compulsory documents during an inspection,” Brussels Mobility says.

Brussels Minister of Mobility and Road Safety, Elke Van den Brandt (Groen), also points out the usefulness of the checks. “Besides infrastructure and raising awareness, enforcement is a crucial factor in the fight for greater road safety,” Van den Brandt states. “The figures prove the usefulness of these checks. The transport sector can be an important ally in increasing road safety in Brussels, and together with it, I want to get these figures down.”
