Volkswagen unveils third-gen Tiguan PHEV with 100 km EV range

Volkswagen has unleashed the third generation of the Tiguan, its midsize crossover, with an all-new design, heavily upgraded tech, and two new plug-in hybrid drivetrains with up to 100 km of fully-electric driving range. The commercial launch is scheduled for Q1 2024.

The Tiguan is VW’s most popular modal globally, so launching an all-new generation is essential for the German manufacturer. Volkswagen has tried to improve the model in all facets, including space, comfort, and efficiency.

Better aerodynamics, more pixels

Regarding looks, the third-gen Tiguan comes closer to the electric ID models and the larger Touareg, with a more rounded design than its squarish predecessor.

This also improves aerodynamics, with a drag coefficient 0.28 compared to the second-gen’s 0.33. Notable details include the IQ.Light matrix LED headlights with 38 400 pixels and the connecting light strips front and back.

The new Tiguan has grown by 30 mm in length, for a total of 4,54 m, which creates more inside space and gives up to 652 liters of trunk space. Sitting in the front, you can notice the same layout as in the recently-revealed Passat, with a 10,25-inch Digital Cockpit and a large 12,9 to 15-inch central touch screen.

Up to 100 km of EV range

Eight drivetrains are on offer regarding power, including two eHybrid PHEV variants. Both are based on the 1.5 TSI gasoline engine, with 150 kW (204 hp) or 200 kW (272 hp) on tap.

A 19.7 kWh battery gives the Tiguan up to 100 km of electric driving range, just like the new VW Passat and the Skoda Kodiaq and Superb. Fast charging is available up to 50 kW (10-80 percent in 25 minutes); regular 11 kW charging takes two hours for a full battery.

Several (e)TSI and TDI engine options are also available, with 96 to 195 kW (130 to 265 hp) of power. A dual-clutch DSG automatic transmission is standard on every drivetrain; the most powerful gasoline and diesel engines also get 4Motion all-wheel-drive.
