Flemish ADR truck drivers can finally take a digital exam from 2024

Starting on January 1st, 2024, truck drivers who want to take the ADR exam to transport dangerous goods can finally do so digitally in Flanders. Until now, they had to convene once a month at a single location, but with this digital method, exam moments can be scheduled freely at 16 exam centers.

The Flemish Federation for Technical Inspection and Driver’s Licenses GOCA will take over the examination process for ADR transport (‘Accord relatif au transport international de marchandises Dangereuses par Route’, or the road transport of dangerous goods) from the Belgian Institute of Road Transport and Logistics (ITLB), starting January 1st, 2024.

No more fixed time and location

GOCA is also bringing the ADR exam into the 21st century. Until now, hopeful drivers had to take a written exam on paper, held once a month on a Saturday at one specific location. From 2024, the exam will be taken digitally in one of the 16 GOCA exam centers at a time and date of your choosing.

This digitalization is possible thanks to linking the IT systems between GOCA and the Flemish government. This also means drivers will know immediately if they have passed or not and that they can check their results via the Flemish online citizen profile.

The exam stays the same

The exam itself does not change, with an allowance of 90 minutes per category and a price of 97 euros, which is indexed annually. The ADR license is an international convention, which means drivers have the right to transport dangerous goods in 54 countries, including the entirety of the European Union.

Drivers must renew their certificates every five years to transport dangerous goods on the road. The rules are updated every two years to stay up-to-date with the latest technological advancements.
