In April 2024 in Milan, Alfa Romeo will unveil its first ‘Sport Urban Vehicle’ in its history, which will also be available in a 100% electric version. It will be named Milano as a tribute to the city where it all began on June 24, 1910.
With the Alfa Romeo Milano, the brand rejoins the B-segment, the biggest in Europe. The first 100% electric ‘Sport Urban Vehicle’ – not Sport Utility Vehicle – aims to be the new gateway to the Alfa Romeo world for everyone. Technically, it will be the brother of the Jeep Avenger or the Fiat 600e and will be assembled in the same plant in Poland.
“With the arrival of Milano in 2024, Alfa Romeo completes a line-up capable of meeting the desires of all our enthusiasts and much more,” says Jean-Philippe Imparato, Alfa Romeo’s CEO. “Milano is intended as a symbolic ‘welcome back’ to all our Alfisti fans.”
“As owners of the Giulietta and Mito, they have been waiting to confirm their love for Alfa Romeo. It also serves as a ‘welcome’ to anyone looking for a unique sporting experience in this segment and the distinctive beauty of Italian design. Milano is the first milestone in the brand’s transition process to electric and, like the Tonale, has the important task of further strengthening Alfa Romeo’s global presence,” he added.
Why Milano?
Since 1910, the iconic Alfa Romeo emblem has included two of the symbols that identify the northern Italian city of Milan: the cross, the historical symbol of the capital of Lombardy, and the Biscione serpent, the coat of arms of the noble Visconti family and one of the city’s most iconic emblems.
For over 60 years (1910 – 1972), the name Milano was present in the lower part of the logo, and through 1918, it was accompanied by the acronym ‘A.L.F.A.’ (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili). From 1919 onward, it became Alfa Romeo.
The city of Milan has always played a crucial cultural role in the fields of fashion, design, and music. Alfa Romeo says it has chosen Milano “to embark on a new, exciting, and daring chapter in its history: reinterpreting sportiness in the 21st century”.
Member of the family
The Milano will be based on the same eCMP platform (now called STLA Small) that is commonly used inside the Stellantis Group. So, we can expect hybrid versions with a 1.2-liter gasoline engine and two fully electric variants.
The first is well-known; it’s the recently introduced version with the M3 synchronous motor (115 kW/156 hp) coupled to a 54 kWh battery pack. The second will be the top version, Veloce, which will probably feature two electric motors driving the four wheels.
To differentiate itself from its brand brothers in the Group, Alfa Romeo counts on its sporty image and newly acquired reliability and quality finish label, based on recent excellent performances in the J.D. Power Sales Satisfaction Index and Initial Quality Study.


Recently, Alfa Romeo booked some significant advances in sales. These are due to the success of the new Tonale, which already represents 60% of total sales volume. But Imparato expects that the venue of the Milano will alter this ratio. That would be excellent news for Alfa Romeo’s finances, the profit per unit of the Milano being the highest of all current Alfa’s.
Zero-to-zero plan
That is handy when Alfa Romeo wants to realize its ambitious ‘From 0 to 0 plan’. An approved and funded long-term product plan with the bold objective to go from ‘0’ electrified vehicles in 2021 to a line-up with ‘0’ emissions in 2027 to become the fastest transition to electric in the entire automotive landscape.
In 2022 came the Tonale Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid Q4. In 2023, Alfa Romeo returned to the ‘custom-built cars’ world, presenting the 33 Stradale (BEV and ICE).
2024 will see the debut of the first 100% electric Alfa Romeo, the Milano. In 2025, there’s the unveiling of the first vehicle exclusively available in a 100% electric version, most probably a sedan (Giulia successor) because Imparato still believes in sedans and sees their aerodynamical advantages in BEVs. In 2027, the new Alfa Romeo range is meant to be 100% electric.
