Volkswagen’s ID.2 to get an SUV pendant

Volkswagen is planning a second version of the upcoming, affordable  ID.2 small EV. It will be a compact SUV version based on the same MEB platform and with the same drivetrain.

Stepan Rehak, spokesperson for Design at VW Passenger Cars, posted the teaser image on social media. Rehak also confirmed it will arrive in 2026.

ID.2all Concept

At the beginning of the year, Volkswagen revealed the ID.2all Concept, the concept version of its compact, affordable EV that should be offered at a price tag below € 25 000 and slot in under the ID.3 Golf-sized EV hatchback.

Based on a new entry-level version of its MEB platform, the concept featured a 450 km range with prices starting under € 25,000. It’s not sure if the range of the basic version will be that far, depending on the capacity of the battery pack (probably LFP)  in that car.

The exterior design is inspired by icons like the Golf but also VW’s current segment B hatchback, the Polo. According to VW at the time, “the ID.2 will be spacious like a Golf and affordable like a Polo”. VW’s CEO, Thomas Schäfer, added that “this ID.2all Concept shows where we want to take the brand”.

VW Passenger Cars recently brought back former Bentley and Audi designer Andreas Mindt to lead the EV design team. Mindt said the ID. 2all is based on three pillars: stability, likability, and enthusiasm.

The interior features a 12,9-inch touchscreen with a new menu structure and multifunction steering wheel. The idea at VW is that it has to be far better and more reliable than the bug-infected software in the first ID.3s now that Volkswagen is developing its own software via Cariad. Not that this new VW software daughter has been a success from the start, Schäfer had to intervene a few times.

The clean and sober interior of ID.2all with new in-house developed software, will probably be taken over in the SUV version /Volkswagen

SUV version

The production version of the ID. 2all will be one of 10 new EVs launched by 2026. It is expected to be launched in 2025. Following that, a new compact electric SUV will roll out in 2026.

Volkswagen is teasing this new ID. 2all SUV for the first time. One can see the SUV’s sleek profile, similar to what’s shown in the ID. 2all. The SUV derivative features a design similar to what is found in other VW ID electric SUVs. There appears to be a light bar up front and a roof spoiler in the rear.

The electric SUV is expected to come with two battery options: 38 kWh or 58 kWh. It’s likely to start at a price of around € 30 000,  to scale it in below the ID.3.

Affordable EVs needed

The new small  EVs have to create a new jumpstart for Volkswagen. Still lower in the market, there are talks of an even smaller ID.1 with a base price of less than € 20 000. For this car, Volkswagen is talking to Renault (and maybe others) to co-develop and produce the car as a stepbrother of the recently announced Twingo ‘Legend’, due in 2025.

After announcing additional job cuts last month, VW boss Schäfer said the brand is “no longer competitive”. The company had to slow down EV production due to lower demand and amid rising interest rates and new lower-priced rivals.

An affordable, small electric SUV, along with the already announced hatchback, would likely help boost sales, but can VW afford to offer prices that low? Like most of the European manufacturers, it’s hoping new battery tech and manufacturing processes will help drive down costs over the next few years.

And when a possible partner like Renault boasts that it can cut the production cost of EVs by 50% within a few years, Volkswagen is listening more than carefully.
