Anyone who wants to hand in a license plate in Belgium can do so by depositing it – free of charge – with the Vehicle Registration Service (Dienst voor Inschrijving van Voertuigen, DIV) in Brussels. You can also send it – wrapped – via bpost, the Belgian postal service, and this will cost you 5.15 euros.
From August 1, 2025, the DIV (Vehicle Registration Service) will be responsible for the complete cancellation of license plates, so you will no longer be able to drop them off at the post office for free.
New bpost service
Instead, Bpost now offers a new service: you can still hand in your unpackaged plate at the post office, and Bpost will package and deliver it to DIV the next working day. Bpost charges €17.99 for this service.
The change will allow for more control by the DIV, which may simplify administration, but the ‘service’ offered by Bpost is considerably more expensive than sending or delivering your number plate yourself.
Please note that it is the official license plate, the one with the embossed DIV logo on the back of the car, that must be submitted.
Other categories
As of August 1, 2025, the registration of vehicles such as motorcycles, mopeds (classes A/B), speed pedelecs, and light four-wheelers already registered in Belgium will be simplified through your insurer.
You no longer need to visit bpost to obtain the form and have your previous registration certificate canceled. This saves €12 in administration costs from 2023 onward: those €12 costs will disappear for those who re-register already registered vehicles through the insurer. This will shorten and streamline the process—a positive step toward digitalization and simplification for citizens.
