Brussels is getting a new cycle highway: the C223 will connect Bockstael (Laeken) with the former Kuregem station (Anderlecht) along railway line 28, which runs between Schaerbeek station and Brussels-South.
The 6.5 km long cycle and walking path, which is being constructed just now by the Brussels public works contractor Beliris, crosses five municipalities: the City of Brussels, Jette, Koekelberg, Molenbeek, and Anderlecht.
The project plays a key role in strengthening the urban cycling infrastructure and promotes active mobility that connects to the broader network of Flemish and Walloon cycle highways.
Complete makeover
Between Belgica and Simonis, Jean-Baptiste Serkeyn Street will undergo a complete makeover, with a meeting place, wider footpaths, and a two-way cycle path with a speed limit of 20 km/hour.
Around 40 trees will also be planted, and a green space with play and sport facilities will be created. Gemba- and Gisèle Halimi Street will also be redesigned as bicycle zones.
On the section between Weststation and Jacques Brel, a separate cycle path will be constructed on part of the Ninove Road. Verheyden Street will become a bicycle zone, while Avenue Grandor will get a safe crossing to Glasgow Street.
Budget of almost €10 million
Finally, at L28 Park, north of the new Thurn & Taxis district, gentle slopes will be created at the entrance to Tielemans Street and Belgica Avenue to bridge the 7-meter height difference.
The three construction sites are expected to be completed by winter 2026. A subsidy from the European recovery plan is financing the budget of just under 10 million euros.
