Anyone driving a camper or motorhome weighing more than 3,500 kg will soon no longer be required to hold a category C driver’s license. With a short training course or exam, a category B driver’s license will soon be sufficient for campers up to 4,250 kg. With a trailer, this can even reach up to 5 tons.
This is what newspapers ‘Het Nieuwsblad’ and ‘Het Belang van Limburg’ wrote today, based on information from Minister of Mobility Jean-Luc Crucke (Les Engagés).
Current weight limit
The change was necessary because modern campers, with all their trimmings – especially those with passengers and a full water tank – easily exceed the current limit. This problem will only worsen when electric campers become available on the market.
A political agreement has now been reached in Belgium, but the European Union still needs to approve the new directive formally. After that, Belgium must also transpose it into national law.
For road safety reasons, drivers of campers weighing more than 3,500 kg will still be required to complete a short training course or pass an exam. But that will still be much easier than obtaining a category C truck license.
