Electricity provider Engie offers free electricity during ‘happy hours’ when there is an oversupply of renewable energy. The offer applies to all Engie electricity customers, regardless of their contract. They only have to have a digital meter.
Customers can register starting today by activating the Happy Hours service, and the offer is valid until June 1st. The savings on electricity costs will be credited to the app at the beginning of the following month. Amounts of €5 or more can then be deposited into people’s accounts.
Notification in advance
After registration, customers will receive a notification in the app one day in advance of periods with a surplus of renewable energy, the following day, both during the week and on the weekend. Engie aims at encouraging its customers to shift their electricity consumption to times when renewable energy is abundant.
Last year, Engie launched a pilot project with ‘happy hours’ for 1,300 testers. During the six-month program, there were 45 days with happy hours, totaling 163 hours of free green electricity.
‘Different way of consuming’
“The energy transition requires not only more renewable energy production, something Engie continues to focus on, but also a different way of consuming,” says Vincent Verbeke, CEO of Engie Belgium.
“By better aligning our consumption with times when the sun and wind are providing abundant, sustainable, and affordable energy, we can relieve the burden on the electricity grid, avoid waste, and maximize the use of renewable sources.”
Engie supplies electricity to 2.8 million customers in Belgium.
