This Ford Mustang is not like the others. It’s Ford’s latest electric dragster, the Cobra Jet 2200. And yes, that number is based on the amount of horsepower it develops.
Thanks to multiple upgrades, it ran a 6.76-second quarter-mile at the NHRA meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina, officially making it the fastest electric vehicle in the world.
The first Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 was unveiled in 2020. This electric dragster was built to develop EV technology using motorsports, with a 1,400-horsepower drivetrain and a quarter-mile time of 8.308 seconds @ 167.93 mph (270.2 km/h).
Later, the Super Cobra Jet 1800 was created, gaining 400 horsepower and losing 1,000 pounds (around 450 kg) compared to the original. And now, the Cobra Jet 2200 is here, raising the bar even further.
Lighter and more powerful…
It again gains 400 horsepower compared to its predecessor, delivering 2,200 horsepower to the wheels and 1,817 Nm of torque. And again, it is over 1,000 pounds (450 kg) lighter than the Super Cobra Jet 1800, thanks to a custom tubeframe chassis, a carbon body, and a lightweight vinyl wrap, greatly improving the power-to-weight ratio.

… but also borrowing traditional technology
But then comes the challenge of putting all of that power on the asphalt. For this, Ford turned to tried-and-true drag-racing technology, with a 5-speed clutchless transmission coupled to a Reverse-Acting Centrifugal Clutch (RACC) that eliminates slip during shifts. This also makes the Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 look like a traditional dragster.
Finally, a pyrotechnic circuit breaker (or pyrofuse) was installed to ensure safety. In essence, it’s a small explosive that cuts all power to the high-voltage system in an emergency, working faster than a traditional melting fuse.

6.76 seconds at 222 mph
All of this work culminated in a 6.76-second quarter-mile pass, achieving a top speed of 222 mph (357 km/h) in that time. That makes the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 the fastest electric car ever in a straight line.
To put that into context: the 2,100-horsepower Rimac Nevera R set a 7.9-second quarter-mile time during its record run in July 2025.
And with every tenth of a second becoming exponentially more difficult to achieve in drag racing, going over a second faster than a multimillion-dollar or euro hypercar is very impressive. Although Top Fuel dragsters achieve times of under 4.5 seconds. So there is still room for improvement.
Ford and electric race cars
The Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 also isn’t Ford’s only foray into electric motorsport. At Pikes Peak, the Blue Oval ran the Super Mustang Mach-E with over 1,600 horsepower. Meanwhile, the SuperVan 4.2 with 2,000 horsepower set a blistering time at the Nürburgring, to honor the late Sabine Schmitz.
