NÜWIEL, a German manufacturer of eTrailers, has been selected by the City of Antwerp for a new pilot project under the “Smart to Antwerp” initiative to help the city transition to zero-emissions logistics.
Local businesses and entrepreneurs can try NÜWIEL’s eTrailer for free for 4 weeks to see if it can help reduce traffic congestion in the city without compromising on logistical convenience.
Up to 200 kg
The NÜWIEL eTrailer is the first bicycle trailer with electric drive and zero-force sensor technology, enabling anyone to transport heavy, bulky goods in a sustainable, safe, and effortless way.
Thanks to its globally patented technology, the eTrailer automatically adjusts its speed with millisecond precision – both when accelerating and when braking.
The eTrailer also attaches to any bicycle or e-bike in seconds and automatically converts into a handcart when unhooked. Its small turning radius makes it possible to move heavy loads in busy urban areas, inside buildings, and even through elevator doors. No throttle or control panel is required.
The device can carry up to 200 kg and is equipped with smart sensors, dual brakes, and integrated suspension for the safe transport of fragile and heavy goods.
The Hamburg-based company’s clients include UPS, IKEA, Dott, Airbus, and, since 2021, bpost.

Eight projects selected
In addition to a free 4-week trial period, participants in Antwerp will also receive full technical support and advice, as well as the opportunity to customize the eTrailer with their own branding and modifications tailored to their transportation needs.
The trial results will determine how the eTrailer can be deployed in the long term. The project aims to reduce car trips, cut costs, lower CO2 emissions, and alleviate traffic congestion.
Only routes that start or end in the city of Antwerp (including its districts), Beveren-Kruibeke-Zwijndrecht, and the Port of Antwerp are eligible.
NÜWIEL was selected as one of the eight projects to receive funding under the “Smart to Antwerp” program – an initiative by the City of Antwerp that promotes innovative solutions for cleaner, smarter, and more efficient urban mobility.
