Dutch EV riders are increasingly driving electric outside the Netherlands – and covering greater distances – during the summer holidays. That is the conclusion of Travelcard, a B2B mobility provider in the Netherlands. For instance, the number of charging sessions abroad by Dutch EV drivers rose by 55% across 31 countries over a three-year period.
The number of charging sessions is rising rapidly, particularly in popular Southern European holiday destinations. In Spain, the number of Dutch EV drivers has nearly quadrupled, and in Italy, it has doubled.
Spain and Italy
The strongest growth is evident in holiday destinations, such as Italy (114%) and Spain (276%). However, Austria – often part of routes to Southern and Eastern Europe – also saw a 101% increase.
Even in countries where electric driving was barely a factor three years ago, the number of EV trips is now rising sharply. For instance, trips to Sweden, Croatia, and Portugal have increased exponentially. Travelcard users also recently drove electric vehicles to destinations such as Estonia, Liechtenstein, Greece, Lithuania, and Iceland for the first time.
Transit countries
Charging activity is also increasing sharply in neighboring countries. More than a third (35%) of charging sessions abroad take place in Germany, a quarter (26%) in France, and nearly a fifth (18%) in Belgium. Compared to 2023, the number of charging sessions grew by 85% in Germany, 86% in France, and 69% in Belgium.
“These are not just destinations, but also important transit countries for journeys to final destinations further afield. This growth therefore shows that the Dutch are increasingly driving electric vehicles across the border,” says Peter van Hemert, Managing Director at Travelcard.
Confident
According to Travelcard, the figures show that Dutch EV riders are increasingly confident about charging outside the Netherlands. And that is important, according to Van Hemert. “After all, you want to know where you can charge along the way, that the charging actually works effectively, and that payment is easily arranged.”
The study is based on Travelcard charging transactions across 31 countries in Europe, Scandinavia, and Turkey from 2023, 2024, and 2025. Travelcard recorded 1,836,942 charging sessions in the countries studied during July 2023, 2024, and 2025.
Travelcard users can refuel at over 70,000 stations across Europe and charge at more than 1 million charging points throughout the continent. In addition to charging and refueling, the Travelcard can also be used for parking, minor maintenance, and car washes.
