Mobility federation TRAXIO, which also represents carwashes in Belgium, is calling for responsible water use and for cars to be washed in a ‘water-conscious’ manner. The federation advocates using a professional carwash instead of setting to work with a bucket and garden hose.
“Professional car wash systems use up to 95% recycled water that is continuously reused,” explains Guy Proost, representative of the carwashes within TRAXIO. “Actual water consumption is therefore very limited.”
In other words, having your car washed at a professional carwash uses much less water than washing it yourself – making it much more sustainable, not only in terms of water consumption but also regarding environmental impact.
Strictly regulated
When a car is washed on a driveway or in front of a home, oil residues, brake and tire particles, and other pollutants are discharged into the sewer system, our waterways, or the groundwater. Professional carwashes avoid unnecessary pollution.
Professional installations are strictly regulated, are checked for water reuse and filtration, and must periodically remove sludge to prevent pollution.
Professional carwashes account for only a tiny fraction of annual drinking water consumption: just a few tenths of a percent. Consequently, closing them during periods of drought would have little or no impact on water usage. Yet, it would encourage people to wash their cars at home, resulting in both higher drinking water consumption and pollution.
