On the Chaussée de Malines/Mechelsesteenweg, between the Quatre-Bras/Vierarmen intersection and Avenue des Fougères/Varenslaan in Wezembeek-Oppem, work has begun on the construction of a new bike path.

The bike path will connect the Quatre-Bras/Vierarmen intersection on the Ring with the E40. The route runs largely along the Brussels Ring Road between Tervuren and Zaventem.

In this way, the Flemish government aims to connect the Brussels-Leuven (F203), Brussels-Wezembeek-Oppem (FWOB), and Brussels-Tervuren bike highways.

In 2 phases

Due to the construction work, the Chaussée de Malines/Mechelsesteenweg will be closed to traffic heading toward the Ring until mid-October. However, according to the municipality of Wezembeek-Oppem, the Quatre-Bras/Vierarmen intersection will remain accessible, and there will be no impact on the highway.

In a second phase, the construction work will move along the Ring, first in Wezembeek-Oppem and then toward Zaventem.

3 extra bike bridges

Along with the construction of the traffic-separated bike path, 3 new bike bridges are also being built. One bridge will span Avenue de Wezembeek/Wezembeeklaan, a second will span Avenue Oscar De Burbure/Oscar De Barburelaan, and a third will span Rue Alphonse Lenaerts/Alphonse Lenaertsstraat.

This is not the first cycling project at this location. In November 2024, a striking 67,5-meter wooden bicycle and pedestrian bridge, designed by Ney & Partners, was opened at that same intersection as part of the F29 bicycle highway between Brussels, Tervuren, and Leuven.

The work is scheduled to be completed by January 2028.
