Opulence with an environmental conscience in the automotive world is now possible thanks to the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV. It’s not only Maybach’s first electric model, but it also features some sustainable innovations for interior materials.
The luxury car segment has never been healthier, which means Mercedes-Maybach can afford to expand its model range a bit more. And the time finally seems to have come for the top segment to start its transition toward electric mobility, with Rolls-Royce’s Spectre coming soon and now with the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV. It’s the third Maybach model after the S-Class and GLS, and Maybach’s first EV.

Bling bling
Where the ‘normal’ EQS SUV tries to hide its size with an anonymous shape, the Maybach version stands out with lots of chrome, a unique faux-grille, a Maybach logo pattern incorporated into the lower air scoops, and exclusive 21- or 22-inch wheels. Two-tone paintwork is also a staple from Mercedes’ luxury division, while the upright star on the hood makes a comeback.
But the essence of the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV is found on the inside, with (optional) ‘First-Class’ rear seats, where the center console extends to the rear and includes thermal cup holders, folding tables, and a fridge for the ever-important bottle of champagne.
The rear-seat entertainment consisting of two 11,6-inch screens in the front seats’ backrests is standard, as well as the Burmester 4D surround system with 15 speakers. The rear seats also feature heating, cooling, and massage functions.
Airmatic air suspension is standard, allowing for a raised ride height of 35 mm, while the rear axle can also steer up to ten degrees, which makes the turning circle a bit smaller. In addition, the ‘Comfort’ driving mode is replaced by a special ‘Maybach’ mode, which ensures minimal body movement under the rear seats thanks to an oscillation node.

Sustainable-ish
New for the EQS SUV is the option of sustainable leather. While it’s not vegan leather (yet), Mercedes-Maybach does make sure the land for the animals has not contributed to deforestation and requires its partners to deliver eco-balance reports. In addition, the leather itself is tanned using coffee bean shells and with less water.
Technically, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV gets a 484 kW (658 hp) and 950 Nm drivetrain, allowing a standing sprint to 100 km/hour in 4,4 seconds. Unfortunately, no battery specs are given, but Mercedes does mention a range of up to 600 km, which means it’s likely the 108 kWh pack from the other EQS SUV models.
Pricing and market launch details are as yet unknown.
