Lamborghini’s plan to become the first sports car brand with an entirely electrified line-up went live at the prestigious Monterey Car Week 2024, where the brand launched the Temerario. This all-new entry-level sports car replaces the Huracán. It aims to combine higher performance and higher sustainability with a plug-in hybrid driveline.
Following the introduction of the Revuelto and the Urus SE, Lamborghini has completed the hybridization of its entire line-up, which it previously announced under the Direzione Cor Tauri strategy.
“The Temerario completes the next chapter in our Direzione Cor Tauri plan by hybridizing the full product line while we continue the development of our full electric model debuting at the end of the decade,” explained Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann.
For two cylinders, less
Adding a plug to the least expensive Lamborghini changed the engine choice. The famous V10, which helped create one of the company’s most successful model lineages, is buried. The heart of the Temerario is a groundbreaking 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine designed and developed entirely at Lamborghini’s headquarters in Sant’Agata Bolognese.
But with two cylinders less, this engine doesn’t fail to impress, as it can reach an astonishing 10,000 rpm. Paired with three electric motors, Lamborghini’s newest ‘bull on wheels’ delivers a combined output of 920 horsepower (684 kW), propelling the car from 0 to 100 km/hour in just 2.7 seconds and reaching a top speed of over 340 km/hour.
Tackling CO2 emissions
The V8 engine produces 789 horsepower (588 kW) and a torque output of 730 Nm, while the electric motors add 148 horsepower (110 kW) each. The front axle is powered by two engines, allowing for all-wheel drive when needed and enabling the car to drive in full electric mode.
The third electric motor, located between the V8 and the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, functions as a torque gap filler, smoothing out gear shifts and eliminating turbo lag for a more responsive driving experience.
A 3.8-kWh lithium-ion battery powers the e-motors. For the best weight distribution and a low center of gravity, Lamborghini placed the pack in the central tunnel, taking advantage of the space created by positioning the gearbox behind the engine. The battery can be fully recharged in just 30 minutes using the onboard charger, which has a capacity of up to 7 kW.
Additionally, it can be replenished through regenerative braking from the front wheels or directly by the combustion engine. And yes, while driving in zero-emission mode, this sports car is only driven by the front wheels. Despite the power play from the plug-in hybrid driveline, Lamborghini states that Temerario’s CO2 emissions are 50% better than Huracan’s.
The most useable Lamborghini?
True to Lamborghini’s design ethos, the Temerario boasts an assertive, wedge-shaped silhouette with the hexagonal styling cues that have become a trademark for the brand. The front end features distinctive daytime running lights integrated into the lower bumper, serving as air tunnels to cool the brakes.
Large air intakes near the rear wheels feed the twin-turbo engine, while additional ducts on the shoulder line and behind the side windows enhance aerodynamics.
Inside, the Temerario offers a blend of high-tech features and luxury materials, making it more livable than previous Lamborghini models. Owners should find more comfort in the still-raw sporting experience this coupé delivers, benefitting from an 18-way adjustable, heated, and ventilated seat. The new aluminum space-frame chassis provides additional headroom and legroom.
The Temerario’s infotainment system is cutting-edge. It has three screens from a digital gauge cluster, a central touchscreen, and a smaller display for the passenger. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and can be customized with dedicated apps like telemetry for track enthusiasts.
