Belux registrations down 10.2% in March 2025

According to data from the Federal Public Service Mobility and Transport and the sector federation Febiac, car registrations in March 2025 fell by 10.2%. The market for individual buyers has almost returned to the same level as the professional market.

In March, 40,185 new cars were registered, and this regress is due to the decrease in registrations in the professional part of the market (-23.4 %). Registrations for individual buyers were again higher than last year (+9.6%).

Looking at the year’s first quarter, we see that 120,940 cars were registered, a decrease of 10.5%. The professional market also shrunk by 23.3%, while individual buyers increased their purchases by 10.6%.

Gasoline cars are keeping their market share of around 42%, but BEVs are catching up (34%), while hybrids are also increasing (11.6%). PHEVs (7.9%) are becoming less prevalent in the Belux, in contrast to many other European countries, and diesel (3.2%) is slowly shrinking into oblivion.

The registration of light commercial vehicles increased by 10.5% in March and 11.2% for the first quarter of 2025. The registrations of heavier vehicles decreased in March by 9.7% under 16 tons and 16.2% over 16 tons.

Motorized two-wheelers still decreased, but only by 2.4%, indicating that the market is slowly recovering from validating the Euro 5+ standard in January.

By brand

BMW continues to lead the market in March, with a market share of 11.5%. Second is Volkswagen (market share 9.2%), and third is Mercedes (7.2%). Audi fell back to 4th place, with a 6.4% share but a sales decrease of 20.5%. Fifth is Dacia (6.2%), and sixth is Renault (5.8%).

With a sales increase of 65.3% in March, Peugeot climbs again (5.7% share), pushing Toyota onto eighth place (5.1%). Number nine is Skoda (4.3%), and tenth is Volvo, despite a sales decrease of 47.5%.

Other serious losers are Citroën (14th, -20.9% in sales), Tesla (16th, -69.3%), Seat (24th, -52.4%), Mazda (26th, -38%), Porsche (27th, -34.9%), DS (34th, -36.5%), and Smart (41st, -56.3%).

The winners are Mini (17th, +186.4%), MG (19th, +47.8%), Fiat (22nd, +72%), Cupra (23rd, +54.9%), BYD (25th, +128.2%), Jeep (28th, +44.6%), Polestar (29th, +77.5%), Alfa Romeo (31st, +117.4%), and Alpine (35th, +122.7%).

Most Chinese brands, like Leapmotor, Omoda, Jaecoo, BAIC, Maxus, etc., are coming onto the market, still with small absolute numbers but climbing rapidly. With a sales decrease of 82.9% (from 41 to 7 cars registered), Jaguar has almost vanished from the Belux market.

We see the same tendencies for the first three months but with minor shifts. The top three stay the same, but Renault is fourth, and Audi is fifth. The battle was tight for sixth, seventh, and eighth place, which Dacia momentarily won before Toyota and Peugeot. Kia is number nine, and Volvo completes the top ten.

Also, Tesla’s most significant sales drop was 58.2%, with its market share dropping from 5.3% to 2.5%. The brands profiting most from this regress are Polestar (+67.6%), BYD (+91.5%), and relative newcomers like Xpeng and KG Mobility.
