Chery introduces Omoda 9 SHS PHEV in Belgium and Netherlands

Chery Group—China’s largest vehicle exporter—announces a second model, alongside the Omoda 5 (ICE and EV), the flagship SUV, the Omoda 9 SHS. This one isn’t fully electric, but it is a plug-in hybrid with an electric range of 145 km, and it is offered for €52,900.

The Omoda 9 is known in China as the Exeed Yaoguang, which was launched at the beginning of 2024. It’s the same mid-size crossover SUV that’s exported as the Omoda 9 or Omoda C9/9 in markets such as Europe, Malaysia, and South Africa.

Not a fully electric

It could easily be mistaken as an electric vehicle with its front face adopting a frameless grille decorated with diamond shapes.

In China, it was introduced first with a 2.0 TGDI turbo engine. Here in Europe, it is the PHEV version, featuring a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine (143 hp/105 kW) paired with three electric motors: two in the front and one at the rear.

They deliver a combined power of 450 hp (335 kW) and 650 Nm of torque, offering quite good performance figures for a PHEV, such as sprinting from 0 to 100 km/hour in 4.9 seconds. Not bad for a midsize SUV with a curb weight of 2,270 kg and these dimensions (4.77 m × 1.92 m × 1.67 m and a wheelbase of 2.80 m).

It’s an all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicle equipped with Chery’s Super Hybrid System (SHS) and a 3-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT). That allows, according to the carmaker, for 11 gear combinations and nine different drive modes to choose from.

It’s touted by the marketeers as “designed to offer quiet luxury, without the premium price”, combining near-silent ride quality with high-end features. It features acoustic glass and noise-reducing tyres, which make it exceptionally quiet, with an interior noise level of less than 45 dB at city speeds.

The Omoda 9 SHS features a 34.46 kWh LFP battery from CATL, enabling a pure electric range of 145 km. Combined with a 70-liter gasoline tank, the vehicle’s effective range exceeds 1,100 km.

It won’t get you to the south of Spain from Belgium or the Netherlands without a tank stop, but it gives those with too much range anxiety to go fully electric ‘ammunition’ to defend their choice. It allows for 65–70 kW DC fast charging from 30 to 80% in approximately 25 minutes, or 5.5 hours of slower AC charging at 6.6 kW.

The vehicle features 18 advanced driver assistance functions (ADAS), including Emergency Braking Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and Highway Assist, as well as adaptive LED matrix lights, around-view cameras, adaptive cruise control, and automatic parking.

Premium version for Benelux?

With Sony, a premium audio system was developed with 14 speakers, including speakers in the headrests. Comfort features include heated, ventilated, and massaging Nappa leather seats, as well as a cabin air purifier and heated rear seats.

All this comes included for a suggested list price of €52,900. In Spain, a more affordable version of the Omoda 9 SHS is already available for €39,900.

Darren Tu, Managing Director for Chery’s Belux operations, officially took on the role in May, with a clear mandate to establish Omoda and Jaecoo as serious players in the competitive European market. Because the brands aren’t exclusively electric, they can bypass import duties, allowing them to maintain budget-conscious pricing as a sales benefit.

Before coming to Belgium, Darren Tu was appointed by Chery to lead the launch and growth of the Omoda and Jaecoo brands in Spain in 2023. Within eight months, he had established a robust dealer network of 70 outlets and driven sales to surpass 10,000 units by April 2025. Monthly volumes consistently exceeded 1,500 vehicles, making Spain the fastest-growing European market for the group.

“The Belux market holds substantial promise for Omoda and Jaeoo,” Tu said. “With a strong team and the right strategy, I’m confident we can quickly capture meaningful market share. Our focus remains on innovation, design, and sustainability.”
