Mazda shows two concepts and new CX-5 at Japan Mobility Show

During the press conference at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 on Wednesday, Mazda Motor Corporation unveiled two concepts, the Mazda Vision X-Coupé and the Mazda Vision X-Compact (‘X’ pronounced as ‘cross’).

Both are embodying the Company’s theme for this year’s exhibition: ‘The Joy of Driving Fuels a Sustainable Tomorrow’ for 2035. “This phrase expresses not only Mazda’s fundamental spirit, but also the core of its future challenges,” declared Masahiro Moro, President and CEO of Mazda.

“Under the shared global mission of achieving carbon neutrality, Mazda believes that the joy of driving can be a force for positive change for society and the planet. We remain committed to fulfilling the desire of those who love cars and wish to continue driving as long as possible.”

Vision X-Coupé

The Mazda Vision X-Coupé is a sports coupé that embodies the further evolution of the  ‘Kodo-Soul of Motion’ design language. It is powered by a plug-in hybrid system that integrates a two-rotor rotary turbo engine, a motor, and a battery.

With an output of 510 hp, the vehicle offers a driving range of 160 km in pure electric mode and up to 800 km when combined with the engine.

“Furthermore, by combining carbon-neutral fuel derived from microalgae with Mazda’s proprietary CO2 capture technology, ‘Mazda Mobile Carbon Capture’, the vehicle contributes to reducing atmospheric CO2 emissions the more it is driven,” says the press release.

The Vision X-Coupé is a large 4-door coupé, measuring 5,050 mm in length, almost 2 meters in width (1,995 mm, to be exact), and 1,480 mm in height. The car has an ample 3,080 mm wheelbase, providing space for four passengers.

Vision X-Compact

According to Mazda, the Vision X-Compact is a model “designed to deepen the bond between people and cars through the fusion of a human sensory digital model and empathetic AI.”

Acting like a close companion, it can engage in natural conversation and suggest destinations, helping expand the driver’s world. “This represents Mazda’s vision for the future of smart mobility, where vehicles and people form an emotional connection, much like a heartfelt relationship,” Mazda proudly explains.

At 3,825 mm, the car is indeed compact. It’s also 1,795 mm wide, and 1,470 mm high. The car sits on a 2,515 mm wheelbase. Mazda gives no details about the drive options. The vehicle could be fully electric, given its size and purpose of use, but it could also be a hybrid.

Mazda CX-5

Mazda also showed the new Mazda CX-5 (in European specification) to the general public for the first time. This model represents the evolution of a best-selling vehicle that has sold over 4.5 million units across more than 100 countries and regions. This latest model is designed with Mazda E/E Architecture+, the new electrical and electronic architecture offering an evolved driving experience.

The all-new Mazda CX-5 retains the shape of its predecessor while also being designed for family life. The all-new CX-5 now has an additional 61 liters of cargo capacity, wider-opening rear doors, and a 40:20:40 split-folding bench for extra versatility.

Underneath the hood, the all-new CX-5 is powered by a 2.5-liter e-Skyactiv G 141 petrol engine, paired with 24V Mazda M Hybrid technology with a brake-by-wire system, replacing the previous 2.0-liter base unit.

“This engine delivers confident performance with improved torque for quicker response, seamless acceleration, and better driving comfort,” Mazda promises. Producing 141 PS (104 kW) and 238 Nm of torque, the front-wheel drive variant accelerates from 0-100 kph in 10.5 seconds.

Available in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, the all-new CX-5 benefits from chassis and suspension updates, providing enhanced ride comfort and road handling. It has a towing capacity of up to 2,000 kg. The car will be available in European showrooms from December 2025, depending on the market. In Belgium, the starting price is €32,690.
