Will Camaro, Escalade, and Corvette become separate EV brands?

Building upon the underpinnings of its Ultium architecture, General Motors is looking into lifting its electrification strategy to new levels. The iconic names are the Camaro, Escalade, and Corvette, which could spawn electric versions and become completely separate brands.

Featuring 800 volts technology and fast-charging capabilities up to 350 kW, one of the other main advantages of the Ultium platform is its scalability.

General Motors has used the technology for bigger SUVs and utility vehicles like the Cadillac Lyriq, Chevrolet Silverado EV, and Brightdrop Zevo 600. So far, these have been specific nameplates belonging to singular models. But that might change.

Electric families

Sources from the GM Tech Center leaked to the American car magazine Car and Driver and unveiled that the car giant now has an all-electric Escalade in the works. This isn’t the biggest of surprises, judging the models mentioned above, but simultaneously also, a zero-emission version of the Camaro is on the table.

General Motors has always hailed the sports car abilities of its Ultium structure, with stackable cells to mimic a mid-engined layout. Furthermore, the carmaker is examining if these iconic names can be turned into fully electric families.

The Camaro could result in a 2+2 coupé and convertible as well as two- and four-door SUVs. In addition, the Escalade family could welcome a smaller version and a minivan. A similar strategy is under investigation for Corvette.

Following Ford’s inversion of the Mustang, the company is believed to overhaul the iconic name and morph it into a complete model range, including an all-electric SUV.

Hybrid Corvette E-Ray

In the first phase, however, the Corvette will appear in a hybrid version called e-Ray. Inadvertently, General Motors put the model online last week in its car configurator. By accident. The model was put offline after some bloggers saved some screenshots. The hybrid will use the same wide front as the Z06 but in body color instead of the black patches on the sportier version. In addition, the interior will feature a ‘Regen on demand’ button to adjust the level of energy recuperation to taste.

As the configurator didn’t show a port for charging, it is believed that the model won’t be a plug-in hybrid. Instead, it is assumed that the model will have four-wheel drive. One particular thing the configurator unveiled is that all the details will be made public before its launch in the summer of 2023.
