Toyota Yaris receives second hybrid driveline

As from the summer, the Toyota Yaris can be ordered with a second hybrid driveline gaining power and a refined drive. In addition, the upgrade includes new digital features, such as an instrument display and an app-based key. But as for the design, everything remains like before.

So, Toyota’s minor overhaul of its city car is more of an upgrade than a facelift, as it remains visibly unnoticeable. The most exciting news is that the current 4th generation hybrid version (115 hp, 87 g/km CO2) is supplemented with a similar driveline from the fifth generation.

Half a second less

As such, the new hybrid gains 15 hp, though the 30% rise in torque is more significant. With 130 hp and 185 Nm on tap, the stronger Yaris Hybrid accelerates from 0-100 km/hour in half a second less (9,2 seconds). The extra power comes from an upgraded electric motor, as the 1.5-liter gasoline engine remained untouched.

The performance boost lifts CO2 emissions to 96-116 CO2/km, on par with the GR edition of the 4th generation hybrid driveline figures. That version disappears. The new hybrids will be featured as Premiere Edition, Style, and GR. The Dynamic and Iconic versions get the previous driveline.

‘Hey, Toyota’

Toyota takes the opportunity to give the Yaris a digital boost. The standard instrument cluster is now digital, sized 7 or 12,3 inches, depending on the equipment version. Furthermore, the central multimedia display has grown from 9 to 10,5 inches in its biggest edition. In addition, it features the new Toyota Smart Connect with cloud-based navigation, a ‘Hey, Toyota’ voice control, and wireless connectivity for smartphone operating systems.

As for safety, the upgraded Yaris has a new camera and radar for more advanced scanning for weak road users. In addition, Toyota has refined active safety assists systems like Lane Departure Warning and Road Sign Assist for a more seamless user experience. Up to five drivers can access and use the renewed Yaris through a smartphone app, making it easier to share the car in a family setting.

Premiere Edition

All the advanced functionalities bolster in a new top-of-the-range version called Premiere Edition. It’s launched in a particular Neptune Blue bi-tone color with a contrasting black roof – but other colors are available – and 17-inch wheels. Some patience is required. Though pre-sales start in August, first showroom models aren’t expected before March 2024.
