The Meiser Square in Schaerbeek, a major traffic junction in the neighborhood where public broadcasters VRT and RTBF offices are, will be redesigned completely. Brussels Mobility has applied for a permit. The large roundabout is to make way for two intersections and more green space. The Region hopes to start construction works by 2025.
Specifically, one intersection will connect traffic on Reyers Avenue/Whahis Avenue, and a second intersection will manage the flow from Cambier Street, Rogier Avenue, Louvain Road, and Plasky Avenue.
The tram tracks will be moved to no longer cross the square diagonally. These will be replaced at the square’s edge on the side of Cambier Street. One-fifth of the square will also be softened, while around a hundred trees will be planted. Pedestrians and cyclists will also have broader and safer dedicated spaces.
No more Misery Square
The redevelopment of the busy Meiser Square has been on the table for years. Brussels Mobility and Public Works Minister Elke Van den Brandt (Groen) wanted to deal summarily with the so-called ‘Place Misère’, or ‘Misery Square’.
“Meiser is today an inefficient, dangerous, and unlovable roundabout. It will soon be transformed into a pleasant, green square for residents and a smoother and safer junction for all modes of transport.”
Previously, there was also talk of digging a tunnel for car traffic under Meiser Square, but that plan was rejected. However, there is still talk of a tunnel for tram line 7, although it is not yet known when the studies will be finished.
