BMW Motorrad is bringing the head-up display to the motorcycle world with the ConnectedRide Smartglasses. This clever pair of glasses connect to your smartphone to display all relevant riding data, including navigation and traffic information.
BMW is not the first to introduce a head-up display (HUD) for bikers. Other third-party manufacturers have had these systems for five years or more, although they often use an in-helmet display. BMW is the first OEM to enter this market, and the Germans have opted for a pair of glasses, making its HUD more flexible and more portable.
Only for recent bikes
The ConnectedRide Smartglasses connect to the BMW Motorrad Connected App, which is paired to the bike to transfer relevant data such as the current speed or gear. This also means that only recent bikes supporting the app support these HUD glasses.
The head-up display is projected on the glasses’ right lens and shows navigation data, the speed limit, the current speed, and the gear. Two sets of lenses are supplied: a mostly-clear option and a set of tinted lenses, which means the Smartglasses can also be used as sunglasses. A diopter correction is also available for riders who need regular glasses. The built-in rechargeable battery provides up to 10 hours of use.
However, this futuristic accessory doesn’t come cheap. The glasses retail for 690 euros in Germany and are available in two sizes. The perfect addition to your futuristic-looking electric BMW CE 04 or CE 02 eParkourer?
