Volvo Cars sales for one third electrified and growing

Volvo Cars global sales reached 61 666 cars in September, up 25% compared to the same period last year, as Europe, the US, and China all reported sales growth for the month. Electrified cars represented 34% of all sales, an increase of 37%.

For the first nine months of 2023, the company sold 509 158 cars, an increase of 19% compared to last year. 80 629 of them were BEVs and 112 599 PHEVs, totaling a 38% share of total sales for electrified cars.

Per region

Sales in Europe tallied 25 489 cars, an increase of 32% compared to the same month last year. Sales of so-called Recharge cars (BEVs and PHEVs) grew to 13 599 cars, resulting in a share of 53% or more than half for the European region.

For the US, sales increased by 65% compared to September last year, amounting to 10 946 cars. For this period, the company´s sales of Recharge models made up 28% of the overall sales in the US.

In China, Volvo Cars increased sales during the month of September by 4%, resulting in 15 460 sold cars. Sales of Recharge models grew 20% compared to the same period last year but still represent only 8,2% of total sales.

In general, the sales of fully electric cars are growing much faster than those of PHEVs in all regions except for China.

XC60 is still the best-seller

Volvo Cars’ top-selling model for the month globally was the XC60, retailing 20 243 cars in September against 15 621 in the same month of 2022. It was followed by the XC40 with total sales of 18 306 cars (2022: 14 497), and the Volvo XC90 with 8 530 cars sold (2022: 7 380).

For the near future, Volvo has high hopes for the two fully electric models to be launched very soon, the big SUV EX90 (brother of the Polestar 3) and the much smaller EX30, which will be one of Volvo’s most affordable models, despite being fully electric.

In Belgium, the latter is to be sold for € 38 990, which makes him also eligible for the € 5000 premium the Flemish government foresees for individual buyers in the coming years.
