Dark Knight meets electric drive: Mahindra BE 6 Batman Edition

Indian vehicle manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra is rolling out an electric SUV that looks more at home in Gotham City than on Mumbai’s streets. Meet the BE 6 Batman Edition, a limited-run vehicle developed in partnership with Warner Bros. As Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy inspires it, it is very cinematic indeed. And it saves the planet in its own right, as the driveline is purely electric.

For those not too familiar with the Indian market, the Batman Edition is not a model in its own right, but based on Mahindra’s BE 6, or the second of three EVs the brand has launched since 2023. On the outside, the Batman Edition abandons subtlety in favor of a complete makeover in cameo style. Draped in Satin Black paint, the SUV contrasts with Alchemy Gold brake calipers and suspension springs.

Evoking the Caped Crusader

The aggressive 20-inch wheels are also unique to the special edition and distinguish it further from the standard BE 6. Badges from The Dark Knight trilogy are scattered across the bodywork — on the hubcaps, quarter panels, windows, rear bumper, and even the roof. But the magic really comes to life when you park the car, and LED puddle lamps project the iconic Bat symbol onto the ground. This is how you evoke the services from Gotham’s iconic hero – at least in the movies.

Inside, the theatrics continue. A numbered plaque marks each of the limited-run 300 examples. Charcoal leather and suede upholstery, stitched with gold sepia thread, cover the seats and dash. The Bat emblem is embossed throughout, from the headrests to the “Boost” button that delivers that short surge of extra power when in hot pursuit of a villain. Even the infotainment system is tailored, with a Batman-themed welcome animation and exterior sounds designed to mimic the Batmobile as it roars by on the white screen.

With a bit of help from Volkswagen

Technically, the Batman Edition rides on Volkswagen’s MEB platform, which Mahindra & Mahindra tapped for its new BE lineup. The well-known 79 kWh battery powers a single rear-mounted motor producing 282 hp and 380 Nm of torque, good for an estimated 550 kilometers of range under the WLTP cycle. Price? About 27.79 lakh or a very tempting 23,500 euros. Fun fact: first deliveries are slated for September 20, which is… International Batman Day.

Vikram Sharma, senior vice president for Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products, said: “Batman is more than a pop-culture icon — he represents innovation, resilience, and an unyielding drive to push boundaries. This collaboration brings that spirit to the road in a bold, electric way.” That might be stretching it. On one hand, Mahindra builds upon a tradition of projects inspired by American culture. On the other hand, the Indian public might well be Batman’s biggest fans, so the name resonates extremely well. Let’s not forget: Bollywood is bigger than Hollywood.
