Electra opens Belgium’s first 1000 kW ‘flash charging’ station

Electra, one of Belgium’s leading fast-charging operators, has opened Belgium’s first 1000 kW station in Malle. The chargers themselves have a capacity of 1000 kW, but ‘only’ 600 kW is available per car. Although that’s still enough to recharge them in the time it takes to have a coffee and bathroom break on the road.

Electra has quickly grown to become the largest operator of fast-chargers in Belgium, with over 135 stations now in operation in less than three years. Most of them are located in supermarket parking lots or along busy roads, with nearby facilities for customers to enjoy a break while their cars recharge.

1000 kW charging station, up to 600 kW per car

Although they don’t need much time to get back on the road. Electra usually installs charging stations of 300 kW or more, but the French company now celebrates a first for Belgium: a 1000 kW charging station in Malle. It uses the Alpitronic HYC1000 hypercharger, with a total capacity of 1000 kW.

That’s a nice headline figure, but ‘only’ 600 kW per car is available. Although that’s still more than what current models can achieve. To prove the speed of their new charging station, Electra partnered with Hedin Mobility Group to plug in an Xpeng G9 electric SUV.

The Xpeng G9 electric SUV can take up to 525 kW thanks to its 800V battery, charging from 10 to 80% in around 12 minutes, as demonstrated at the Electra 1000 kW charger in Malle / Electra

Charging time of just over 10 minutes

With up to 525 kW of charging power, the G9 is one of the fastest-charging electric vehicles on the market today. And the proof is in the pudding: it recharged from 10 to 80 percent in just 12.5 minutes, recovering over 400 km of theoretical range. That’s over twice as fast as what EVs were able to do up until now.

“By introducing Belgium’s first 1000 kW station, we demonstrate how our network scales alongside the most advanced vehicle technology available today. Our goal is to provide an ultra-fast, frictionless experience that turns the electric transition into a genuine competitive advantage for every driver and fleet manager”, says Louis-Charles Mosseray, General Manager of Electra BeNeLux.

“While high charging speed is a thrilling technical milestone, the real value lies in the consistency of the driver experience: the confidence of finding an available charger, easy payment with a simple and transparent pricing scheme, and being back on the road in minutes. This seamless experience and reliability are the heartbeat of the Electra network and exactly what sets us apart.”
