More speed pedelecs on Belgian roads thanks to military personnel

The number of speed pedelecs registrations in Belgium rose sharply in the first six months of the year, by more than 8,000 units. This is according to figures from the mobility federation Traxio.

This sharp increase is mainly attributable to military personnel. Recently, they have also been able to lease a bicycle following an expansion of the scheme.

Speeding military

The number of new registrations for speed pedelecs rose by 10,2% in April, +16% in May, and as much as +20% in June. Due to this explosive growth, 8,196 speed pedelecs were newly registered in the first 6 months of the year, representing a 9,5% year-over-year increase.

That figure is still 8% lower than in 2023, but the sudden increase is nonetheless remarkable. According to the mobility federation Traxio, this is mainly because, in addition to civil servants, military personnel – or defense department staff – have recently been blessed to lease bicycles as well. “And they’re choosing speed pedelecs with striking frequency,” says spokesperson Filip Rylant.

Wallonia is catching up

Meanwhile, the leasing segment accounts for a market share of no less than 66% of new speed pedelecs registrations, with East Flanders standing out as the leader in Flanders – the province accounts for nearly half of all registrations, 3,894 out of a total of 8,196, or an increase of just under 29% compared to 2025.

Notably, Wallonia appears to be catching up, as the provinces with the strongest growth are located there: Luxembourg (+60%), Hainaut (+36,4%), Namur (+25%), and Walloon-Brabant (+14,3%).

A private individual used a leased bike

The number of registrations for used speed pedelecs also rose significantly in the first half of the year, by nearly 48% to 6,582, thanks to many leased bikes entering the market.

The number of new speed pedelecs registered by private individuals may have fallen sharply again this year (-10%), but this is precisely because private individuals are switching en masse to cheaper used bikes that the new bike market for private individuals is collapsing.

All these figures combined – used speed pedelecs plus the new ones – also result in a record total of 14,778 registrations – nearly 2,700 more than the previous record set in 2023.
