Xpeng began teasing the G9L SUV in China on Monday, deepening its bet on the large SUV market after the GX flagship. The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker calls the G9L a “global 5-seater tech flagship”, making it another SUV aimed at the global market after the GX and the Mona L03.
Xpeng said the G9L aims to be a “tech benchmark” in China’s 300,000 yuan (±€39,000) segment. The company has yet to announce pricing or a launch date, but said it will release more details over time.
The Xpeng G9L previously revealed core specs in China during the domestic homologation process. The G9L is a full-size SUV with dimensions of 5120/1999/1795 mm. The wheelbase reaches 3,100 mm. It offers a five-seat interior layout only. This way, Xpeng prevents internal competition between the G9L and the recently launched six-seat GX.
The G9L shares core platform technology with this GX; “It comes standard with aviation-grade safety redundancy design, and is developed to the five-star safety standards of the world’s four major safety assessment bodies,” the company said. Those are presumably EuroNCAP, C-NCAP, ANCAP, and Global NCAP.
450 km in nine minutes
The Xpeng G9L has a dual-motor AWD with a 160 kW (215 hp) electric motor on the front axle and a 270 kW (362 hp) e-motor on the rear axle. The combined peak power reaches 430 kW (577 hp). This five-seater can speed up to 200 kph. The brand’s officials highlighted that this model stands on the 800V platform. It allows a car to charge 450 km in nine minutes.
One can choose between two NMC battery packs of 91.9 kWh and 110 kWh, promising a range of 672 to 805 km according to the Chinese standard. A reasonable provisional European range estimate (WLTP) would be approximately 560 to 650 km.
The filings also show that the G9L will come in an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) version, continuing Xpeng’s dual-powertrain strategy. It has a 1.5-liter turbo petrol engine developing 110 kW/150 hp acting solely as a generator. It is then paired with a 63.3 kWh LFP battery.
Xpeng chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng said on Weibo on Monday that the project was approved three years ago, with the goal of building a five-seat flagship tech SUV for the global market.
“Compared with 99% of the vehicles in the 300,000 yuan segment, the G9L is safer, more technologically capable and better looking,” He said.
AI-powered seat technology
The vehicle debuts an AI-powered adaptive seat technology designed for all body types, with 91 pressure sensors built into the seats that can detect weight changes as small as 2 grams and adjust automatically to posture with one touch, He added.
The manufacturer also said the G9L set the fastest moose test result in its class and comes standard with a flagship smart chassis across the lineup.
Teaser videos also show a dual-zone refrigerator, zero-gravity seats, AI digital projection headlights, a 1,152-liter trunk and four power doors.
Its exterior styling adopts the latest design language introduced by the mentioned GX. The G9L boasts hidden door handles, electrically powered soft-closing doors, a closed front end, pronounced rear fenders, and large 22-inch wheels.
The Xpeng G9L’s release date has yet to be revealed. However, the brand’s activity hints at an upcoming launch. According to CNEVpost, the Chinese manufacturer delivered 38,027 vehicles globally in July, up 3.57% year-on-year but down 5.23% from June. Deliveries in the first seven months totaled 204,004 vehicles, down 12.78% from a year earlier.
