BYD turns tiny Racco into weapon for Europe’s €20,000 EV fight

When BYD unveiled its tiny Racco for Japan earlier this year, it looked like a very specific answer to the peculiar rules of the Japanese kei-car market. Six months later, it is becoming clear that some of its technology could also shape BYD’s next generation of small, affordable EVs for Europe.

According to reports from Japan, BYD wants to take the Racco’s compact X-PACK architecture global, including to Europe. That could eventually give the Chinese manufacturer a new weapon in the emerging €20,000 electric city-car battle.

Renault’s Twingo E-Tech is already on the market; Volkswagen is preparing an equally affordable successor to the Up for 2027, reportedly called ID. Up, while Smart is reviving the ultra-compact two-seater with its new #2.

In February, Newmobility.news described the 3.4-meter Racco as more than BYD’s attempt to crack Japan’s fiercely protected kei-car market.

Its unusually efficient packaging could also serve as a test bed for the kind of small, affordable EV European manufacturers are now racing to develop.

According to Japan’s Nikkei, as reported by CnEVPost, the Chinese manufacturer has decided to use the so-called X-PACK technology developed for the Racco in future compact EVs for Europe, Southeast Asia, and South America. Detailed development is reportedly starting now, although the resulting cars are still several years away.

Clever packing

X-PACK sounds like something ordered from Amazon, but it solves one of the most stubborn problems of a tiny electric car: where do you put everything?

Instead of filling the nose with an inverter and various high-voltage electronics, BYD integrates several of those components into the battery system beneath the floor. That leaves more room for passengers and, importantly, more space at the front to absorb crash energy.

In a normal family SUV, a few centimeters here or there hardly make headlines. In a Japanese kei car legally restricted to 3.40 meters long and 1.48 meters wide, they are gold dust.

The production Racco launched in Japan on July 28 at ¥2.145 million, roughly €12,500 before European taxes and duties. The basic version combines a 22.4 kWh battery with 210 km of Japanese WLTC range, while the 35.84 kWh versions stretch that to 320 km. BYD calls it the first electric kei car to pass the 300-km barrier.

And Japanese buyers seem intrigued. BYD collected 1,002 orders in the first two weeks, with at least 80% choosing the expensive 300 Premium. Tiny apparently does not necessarily mean bare-bones.

A new headache for Europe’s small EVs?

Taking X-PACK to Europe could create an interesting new front in the affordable-EV battle. Renault already has its new 3.79-meter Twingo E-Tech electric on sale in Belgium from €19,500, offering a 27.5 kWh battery and up to 263 km of range.

Volkswagen is preparing an equally affordable electric successor to the Up for 2027, expected to cost around €20,000 and reportedly to revive the familiar name as ID. Up.

And then there is Smart. Its forthcoming #2 is perhaps the closest European rival in concept to a Racco-derived BYD. The successor to the fortwo remains an ultra-compact two-seater, but switches to a newly developed dedicated ECA electric platform.

Smart will unveil the production car at the Paris Motor Show on October 12, with European sales planned for 2027. Prices, battery capacity and range have yet to be announced.

BYD itself is already knocking at the same door with the larger Dolphin Surf. It currently starts at €21,440 catalogue price in Belgium and offers up to 322 km WLTP.

A Racco-inspired European BYD positioned below the Dolphin Surf could therefore enter a surprisingly crowded battlefield. At one end would be relatively conventional small hatchbacks such as the Twingo and Volkswagen’s future entry-level model, and at the other, the more specialized, probably more premium, Smart #2.

BYD could have one important advantage. It controls its own Blade batteries, much of its electronics and electric drivetrains, while X-PACK could squeeze more usable car out of fewer meters and potentially fewer components.

If that translates into a genuinely sub-€20,000 European EV, the Racco’s biggest contribution may not be its kei-car dimensions at all, but the pressure it puts on European rivals to make tiny electric cars profitable again.
