Volkswagen has finally shown the ID. California Cruise at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf. But anyone expecting an electric equivalent of the familiar California Ocean may be surprised. VW appears to have solved the weight problem that once put the ID. Buzz camper on hold by keeping this first version deliberately simple.
That makes the Cruise a revealing follow-up to the question Newmobility.news asked two weeks ago: how much can VW put into an ID. Buzz camper in California? Buzz before it becomes too heavy?
For now, not that much. The ID. California Cruise has no pop-up roof, a fixed kitchen, or an integrated water system. Instead, it offers a 2.03-by-1.20-meter bed for two, blackout screens, ventilation grilles, two camping chairs, and a table.
Based on the ID. The Buzz Pro is available with short or long wheelbase and starts at €60,547 in Belgium, with first deliveries planned for early 2027. VW says more fully electric California models will follow by 2028.
Battery becomes campsite power
Electrification adds useful camping features. California Mode keeps USB ports powered and can maintain heating or cooling for up to 48 hours. Vehicle-to-load supplies 2 kW continuously and 3.6 kW at peak, enough for a kettle, a portable hob, or an e-bike charger.
But crucial specifications remain missing. VW has not yet communicated curb weight, maximum permissible mass, payload, or a Cruise-specific WLTP range. Those figures matter because weight previously complicated a more elaborate electric California.
There is another question. EU rules define an SA motor caravan as having, among other things, cooking and storage facilities rigidly fixed to the living compartment.
The Cruise has no obvious permanent kitchen. Newmobility.news has asked Belgian importer D’Ieteren whether it will be homologated as an M1 passenger car or an SA motor caravan, and whether weight or homologation influenced its minimalist layout.
Lightness becomes a theme
VW’s second Düsseldorf premiere makes that even more interesting. Together with Stuff Bubble, it has developed a modular concept for the conventional California Beach. Its inflatable kitchen weighs less than 10 kg, while a removable sleeping system weighs 6 kg as a single bed or 12 kg as a double.
Officially, it is separate from the ID. California Cruise. But the philosophy fits EV campers perfectly: add equipment only when needed, rather than carrying heavy cupboards and furniture year-round.
VW is also taking other routes toward electrification. The regular California remains available as an eHybrid 4MOTION and gains stationary climate control for up to eight hours. The diesel-powered Grand California gets optional LFP leisure batteries and solar panels for the 2027 model year.
So Volkswagen is not simply replacing diesel campers with EVs. It is electrifying the drivetrain and campsite energy supply while rethinking the hardware that turns a van into a camper.
VW delivered the 250,000th California built in Hannover in July, and its range now stretches from the Caddy California to the fully equipped Grand California.
For now, the Cruise shows that a fully electric camper still requires compromise. Volkswagen has found a pragmatic route into electric vanlife. Whether the promised 2028 family will include a true electric Ocean with a pop-up roof, a permanent kitchen, and four sleeping places remains the more interesting question.
