Traxio: ‘Used speed pedelecs sales nearly doubled in three years’

Registrations of new speed pedelecs during the summer months were, on average, just under 20% higher than last year. As a result, the total figure for the first nine months – 12,293 units – is a remarkable 13.4% higher than in 2025, and 14% higher than in 2024.

“If this rapid growth continues over the coming months, 2026 could even be better than 2023,” explains Filip Rylant, spokesperson for mobility federation Traxio.

The explanation for this rapid increase is that the government – specifically the Ministry of Defense – has ordered a large number of new speed pedelecs. In addition, many new contracts are being concluded as current lease agreements expire.

Leasing segment

The big winners are the leasing companies. The leasing segment now accounts for 66.1% of new registrations; the once-dominant private segment (almost half in 2023) has fallen to just 20.9%. The number of new speed pedelecs registered by private individuals has once again dropped sharply this year (-8.1%).

Bicycle leasing offers several clear advantages for companies, including reduced administrative work and no concerns about maintenance, insurance, or residual value.

Second-hand market

The second-hand market is also performing well: up 32.5% from 2025, 63% from 2024, and 92.2% from 2023 – so that’s almost a doubling in three years. In the first nine months, 9,823 vehicles were registered, up 2,408 from last year. Second-hand speed pedelecs thus accounted for 44.4% of total registrations.

In total, we reached a record figure of 22,116 registrations (12,293 new + 9,823 used), or 4,000 more than in 2023.

Speed pedelecs remain primarily a Flemish phenomenon: 98% of all new registrations take place in Flanders. Thanks to several large bicycle leasing companies, nearly half of all new speed pedelecs (47.2%) are registered in East Flanders (5,805 units). Limburg follows with 1,951 units, ahead of Flemish Brabant (1,945) and Antwerp (1,818).
