According to the Chinese bus industry website Chinabuses.org, Chinese manufacturers exported more than 15,000 ‘New Energy’ buses in 2024, including electric, plug-in hybrid, and hydrogen fuel cell buses.
This represents an increase of 28.33% over 2023, with a sharp upswing in December 2024 alone. BYD is, like with new-energy passenger cars, the biggest manufacturer and exporter of new-energy buses.
Chinabuses.org has no other source, but the website has a history of reporting on Chinese domestic bus industry news. In total, 15,444 new-energy buses were exported from China in 2024, although no specific information has been given as to which regions these buses were mainly exported to. December 2024 alone saw a robust result, with 2,361 units exported.
BYD the biggest
Around 25 percent of Chinese new-energy buses are exported. In Belgium, Flemish public transport operator De Lijn famously ordered 500 e-buses from BYD, but these are produced in Hungary.
BYD is, like with new-energy passenger cars, also the largest new-energy bus manufacturer and exporter in China. In 2024, BYD exported 3,582 new-energy buses, a growth of 13.79% year over year.
Behind BYD, Yutong Bus exported 2,700 new-energy buses, an increase of 84.55%, which helped it jump from third to second place in 2024. Higer Bus came in third in 2024, exporting 1,897 new-energy buses (49.14% up from 2023).
